   The way I see it is like this. If I was forced to choose between a world where I might get shot or a world where I might get hacked to bits with a machete, I'd prefer to be shot to death. Sure a person may not be able to hack up 30 people as quickly as they could shoot them, but the death seems much more painful and gruesome. Also if we assume guns are common there is a much better chance for someone else with a gun to stop a violent act than someone with no weapon or only bladed weapons.
