   Expanding on an unpopular topic, because everyone likes to say “eh who cares if you’re popular, it’s gay anyways” but popularity is power of sorts. Charisma is an exquisitely helpful skill to have, and I want our boys to respect its utility in their lives. All my interesting jobs & adventures came about because of a chance, an opportunity that would not have been extended to me if I were an unlikable weirdo.

   Sometimes you’re an unlikable weirdo, though. Doesn’t mean you got to stay that way. That’s why you can’t afford to be stupid, too. You have to be capable of extending some self awareness, engage that white man’s IQ of yours and catch yourself before you start educating the women about the finer points of re-soldering a PS2 to get rid of a region lock so you can play pirated video games. I think a smart guy can mentally power his way out of a lot of those nerdy, awkward pitfalls.

     If you spent your high school years alone in your room, then you’re starting your fruitful 20’s on the back foot, and you’re gonna have to be smart in how you make up for the lost experience.

     Your first gf at 23 yo will not be as forgiving or accommodating as she would have at 15, you won’t be able to make the same boneheaded teen mistakes when stakes have increased from getting a kiss after 3 weeks of “going out” to giving her a ring to wow all her friends.

     THIS is the most painful cycle to watch for me, because these guys just sit back and act confused when they get dumped and assume they’ll just magically happen on a perfect girl who will be totally content to take them in their broken, retarded state. One kid in the family literally told me “I just want someone who wants to hang out at home with me though, I don’t wanna have to choose between my friends or her”.

     It hurts to watch. You CAN get your girl to get to that point, but you can’t start there, you have to ease into that lazy homebody phase as a couple together. No woman wants to start out a new relationship a month in just sitting around rubbing your back while you hang out on voice chat with your faggot friends playing calloduty, you gotta be realistic. (You can get there later, but you’ll have to earn it.)

     I’m sure a couple of you will have a knee-jerk revulsion at this concept, but understand I’m really begging you to get over it and be cool. There’s a whole field of competent, likable guys who are desperate to find more of their own. Sure, my field of work is weird this way, but the vast majority of our pilot jobs go directly to guys that somebody vouches for.

     If you ask, we aren’t hiring. Sorry kid, not interested. Oh, what’s that? You know Kyle? Yeah, he and I went to school together, he’s a good dude. Oh nice, yeah, hey gimme your info and I’ll let you know if something comes up.

     Then I talk to Kyle, if he says you’re competent and the kind of guy you wanna fly with, then I’ll try to find some way to squeeze you in.

     There are plenty of guys that get totally frozen out of this economy because they don’t even try. They’re awful to be around, they’re nannies, they’re irritating. They’re bitchy. They’re selfish. Their resume goes int the pile of paperwork we never look at.

     But the guy who makes work more bearable? The kind of guy I’m happy to have a 36-hour breakdown with? He’s in, he’s employed.

     I’d actually bet that a good number of you guys are just fine already. Most guys in the shitposting crowd are cool enough, you’d probably not even be here if you were the kind of guy I’m really hammering on.

     If anything, the problem I’d expect to see would be guys not hiding their power level adequately.

     @WashedOutGundamPilot Huge disagree. TRVE Charisma is being able to talk about region unlocking your console while girl looks at you with anime eyes.
     
     It does, indeed, take a while to develop so might be wise to restrain from certain topics until you "get it"

     @MechaSilvio I was going to talk about that but it’s straying too far from the path.

     You CAN have that, but you have to lock it behind the relationship gate so only your gf/wife is the one privy to it. When you do that she gets to feel like she’s the only one you’ve ever ‘let in’ to that degree.

     “Oh he looks all cool to you guys but at home he’s just a big nerd” she’ll say, proudly tugging on your arm while talking to her friends over drinks

     @LukeAlmighty Looks aren’t so important in a guy, you can really overcome a lot of ugliness by being the guy people want around. Are you funny? Are you prompt to help people? Do you look outside yourself? Do you make people more relaxed when you walk in the door on a particularly stressful day?

     There are a lot of avenues to be liked, but the overriding factor is stepping outside yourself and figuring out if you’re being the kind of person you would want around.

     2 things I wish someone truly took the time to explain to me.

     1) people are stupid animals. Most of the shit they say is a lie, but they don't know it, because they are literally too dumb to see it.

     2) literally this. That charisma and looks are an asset of equal value as intelligence, and you cannot replace one with the other, no matter how strong.

     @WashedOutGundamPilot I highly recommend spending time with older male relatives/religious fellows who have the skills of charisma. Not only will they be happy to teach you the finer points of being an admirable man, they usually have buckets of the kinda wisdom that all men pick up in a well lived life.

     @Wisconsin_Kraut Stories, too. Human experiences can be the best social lubricant. Talk to paramedics, talk to peace corps hippies. Talk to nurses, amateur racers, ferry pilots, and bouncers. The more stories you hear, the more you can cut in at a new job with “OH MAN, I had a buddy who……”
