MachismoI've had this game idea sitting around for ages, that I'm probably never going to be able to actually make, where the premise is that you play as a ghost haunting a particular person; there'd be some 15-20 characters to pick from. So by default, all you can do is effectively whisper in their ear, try to tuide them into doing what you want. But there'd be a way to possess them directly, where you'd get to play an FPS of their life, as long as they allowed it - though I also wanted some sort of forceful possession but never really figured out how that should work. Although I can come up with some ideas offhand now so maybe I should go back to it at some point. Setting was some sort of "ancient tech" wild-west type thing, I never really fleshed it out. One key thing I wanted was that you'd have no vision of your own; there'd be a whole 3D world going on and your only key to it (with a strong-willed character, at least) was through communicating with your character. Though I had planned for basically every character to be willing to let you at least piggyback their vision without much effort. Probably have the token hardmode character. Also wanted one character where you could convince them you're god. So if you don't do that, you get a completely different path where they're much more rebellious.
At some point I had another idea which I now realise was basically a very cut-down version of this (well, sort-of), just a short like 5/10 minute FPS that tries to add a touch sense; so you'd get indicators of things happening outside your vision, to try to aid immersion. Not sure how well it would actually work though. I just want to play with other senses in games. Like, "can I fully convey the feeling of standing on a windswept heath, and rolling around in the grass?"
@Zerglingman it's pulled from digital but I need to play it the premise is truly batshit weird.
The premise is that you're literally in a coma, the entire world of the game is in the mind of you, and you get to hijack people's minds and control them, and I mean anyone in the game (instead of stealing cars). Be it cops or some random npc, and also you'll do it while these npcs are talking npc shit mid conversation even.
As the game progresses you gain more "powers" including the ability to take over npcs from further distances and all.
Answers like this explain why Matrix can’t compete with Discord. You aren’t giving people a reason to insist on it over Discord. You’re just demanding that they change what they care about.
@PurpCat @NEETzsche To clarify: I will not engage with you seriously because it is you. You aren't looking to solve problems, you are looking for an argument you can feel superior about after ignoring all morality. So, go, keep sucking cock with the rest of the fags. If you want to continue bothering me, I will continue making fun of you for sucking cock. And I will form an assumption that you are a masochist.
@NEETzsche@Zerglingman IMO there's 3 reasons for that: Discord's critical mass and ease of use, Matrix servers being a bitch to host, and defederation/desync issues between servers.
@PurpCat Well I think IA has become easier to use since I last tried it, so at this point I don't mind it. But I fully expect it to go any second now. ZOG's already watching it.
@NEETzsche@PurpCat@Zerglingman I think matrix has potential to be good, but in its current state its a bit broken. I do like the encryption aspect. but it also feels like there is a lack of good servers to sign up for, or at least what I am looking for in a matrix server.
so in matrix's current state I would say the encryption is a plus, I do like how there are a lot of different clients thought only like 3 of them actually work. the rest are still in beta or some shit.
but assuming since you are on discord, at least your furry rp servers can be more private then on discord
I think the fact that every Matrix client is a piece of shit plays into it as well. Not to mention, Discord’s “server” structure where each one has many channels just plain isn’t replicated properly with “Communities” or whatever.
@NEETzsche@Zerglingman >Not to mention, Discord’s “server” structure where each one has many channels just plain isn’t replicated properly with “Communities” or whatever.
I really hate Discord's "server" structure though it's literal garbage. I've been in so many servers where it neuters the flow of discussion by spreading out a small group over 30 channels. It only might work with "servers" with thousands of people, but it'll kill a "server" with 100-500 people (or less).
I saw a Telegram group once Telegram aped that feature and discussion absolutely flatlined once the group rolled that out. Almost no Telegram groups use it for a good reason.
@PurpCat@NEETzsche > I've been in so many servers where it neuters the flow of discussion by spreading out a small group over 30 channels Actually, I'll defend this: Bad use, not bad tool. Discord guild admins have a habit of over-structuring. Well, anecdotally at least. By those same anecdotes I think it's ultimately born from a desire for control (or attention, perhaps), which manifests as wanting to have something to show off to attract people with.
I’ve adopted this disposition where I use Matrix as a bridging protocol between commercial services. This is because Matrix’s backend is where it shines. It’s brilliant because of the encryption and because of the open-endedness of the way “events” are structured (they’re basically just JSON blobs which can have any shape you like), but the true issue with Matrix and other FOSS chat services is their UI/UX is always garbage. Element, Matrix’s flagship client, is a clunky piece of shit and everybody knows it.
@CentaurBreeder@Zerglingman@NEETzsche XMPP clients are worse IMO, but I chalk that up more to the fact that the marketing around XMPP is dogshit and most people in the tech field have bad memories because of the Cisco/Avaya shitware. There are websites suggesting XMPP clients that have not been updated in years and lack encryption.
The Discord ghost town effect is a mismanagement of the style. I run Discord servers and I always make new channels specifically when a certain topic keeps coming up in a channel with a broader topic to the extent that it obstructs other topics from coming up. It’s the containment channel approach, and it’s an approach I got from 4chan. It works very well.
The “servers” with many “channels” structure is fantastic if used properly.
>This is because Matrix’s backend is where it shines. It’s brilliant because of the encryption and because of the open-endedness of the way “events” are structured (they’re basically just JSON blobs which can have any shape you like),
yeah this is exactly what I mean. the backend is really good.
>Element, Matrix’s flagship client, is a clunky piece of shit and everybody knows it.
dude hahahaha element sucks so much dick man. I am begging nheko guys to get it more optimized so it doesnt crash on my laptop. because sucking off a shotgun would be more enjoyable then using element
@NEETzsche@Zerglingman >The “servers” with many “channels” structure is fantastic if used properly.
Yup, but there are a lot of jannies I've seen who also end up doing shit like yelling at anyone who even talks to "TALK IN THIS CHAT PLEASE" and I know of one Discord janny who does this exact thing and only talks to say that.
Or with tiny groups it ends up spreading out discussion.
@CentaurBreeder@NEETzsche@PurpCat@Zerglingman Schildichat for Android is... a modicum better, but it's still got a lot of work to go Element works on my laptop? I guess? But yeah no it's trash but I use it because I trust it over session or really anything else
@CentaurBreeder@NEETzsche@PurpCat >fluffychat is perfect for your phone, but they lack good pc support. I've heard otherwise on the former. Given the latter (which you have severely understated), I have no interest in confirming it. Better to just forget it exists.
>ome terimal ones gomuks is legitimately a good client. It also has automatic hentai mode. :D
@TURBORETARD9000@PurpCat@NEETzsche@CentaurBreeder Keep an eye on syphon. It currently suffers a lot with even moderately heavy accounts (I'm in ~350 rooms ... 400 rooms and it frequently craps out), but it progress quickly for a couple of months every year. Next major release it should be best in field.
@CentaurBreeder@NEETzsche@PurpCat@Zerglingman Unfortunately I've lost hope of seeing quality like professional apps like Discord and co, but they also don't have time or budget like Discord soooooo yeah
I don’t do that unless there are like three concurrent conversations in the same channel and I can’t keep up with them. Topic segregation is the point of channels. But these are janny issues more than software issues.
I don’t think the reason we can’t get good UI/UX out of Matrix or other FOSS chat services has much to do with budgeting concerns. Consider that other FOSS services have a good selection of frontends that people actually like. Example: fedi
Whether you prefer Soapbox, PleromaFE, Misskey, or even Mastodong, the point is, these aren’t UIs that people merely tolerate. They’re UIs people actively like. And they were made by “some guy” on a gratis basis.
@CentaurBreeder@TURBORETARD9000@PurpCat@NEETzsche I have already explained it just before. Roughly once a week he bitches about how he can't find enough cock to suck on matrix/xmpp/irc. Roughly once every two months he does it in a thread I'm tagged in.
@NEETzsche@CentaurBreeder@TURBORETARD9000@Zerglingman >Whether you prefer Soapbox, PleromaFE, Misskey, or even Mastodong, the point is, these aren’t UIs that people merely tolerate. They’re UIs people actively like. And they were made by “some guy” on a gratis basis.
It's also people in the fedi sphere give a shit about it, while the people in the other will be like "yup it works I'll ship it" (see GS).
Well it's had OMEMO for at least 7 years, and OTR (1:1 client encryption) for at least a decade and a half. It mainlined the OMEMO plugin into the core project in the last release. I told you to try Gajim and Conversations (or Monocles Chat), but you instead dug around on generated summarizer websites (which are honestly just content farms that somehow aren't blacklisted yet) that had incorrect information, and were complaining about it. The broken links on the XSF website however are inexcusable.
@NEETzsche@PurpCat@Zerglingman Ooh, ooh! I know! Discord is way more established and Matrix doesn't have all of discord's features! I still believe in Fosscord
Also don't blame me I forget what people told me to use XMPP wise until I asked a friend and he said "use dino" and I found out oh it has no Windows port and unfortunately PDANet doesn't work on Linux (don't blame me blame my shitty job that has wifi fucked up).
@PurpCat@CentaurBreeder@Zerglingman@NEETzsche@arcanicanis I think you could still bypass tether restrictions in some capacity by using ADB and Termux's SSH server. Start the server, connect the device via USB, do `adb forward tcp: tcp:` and then connect to forwarded port on localhost via ssh -D <someotherport>. This will give you working SOCKS proxy with you phone's connection on that port.
@PurpCat@CentaurBreeder@Zerglingman@NEETzsche@arcanicanis Carrier locks were never that much of a thing here, so there's plenty of devices you could at least unlock bootloader on and root. Just have to stay away from Huawei/Honor and Oppo as those locked it with no way out. Might want to avoid Xiaomi as well, those don't allow you to unlock right after purchase and need you to get an account and wait up for a month.
