@Disputatore @lori @aral I'm no expert in Turkish politics, but before AKP rule (Erdoğan's Party), Bülent Ecevit from the DSP party was prime minister. Wikipedia describes him and his party as socialist. And before him were both socialist and conservative politicians. And multiple coups by the military.

That explains why the country's economy continued to grow. But I'm not asking for speculation. A "theory" was proposed where it is claimed that neo-liberal policies before Erdogan resulted in him getting the support of the disfranchised. So I'm asking, to people who may know of the situation at the time, if the previous leaderships followed neo-liberal policies.
