If they had a less monolithic structure, and curated different kinds of content in different buckets, their situation wouldn't be so dire.
Could even keep stuff that is unhostable on a dark-web-only accessible server, separated so no one even knows what entity is hosting it.
The current issue is, all the eggs are in one basket, and it is all or nothing.

It's the same thing that fucks over more "legit" and less shitty sites like the Internet Archive, IMO.
IA is in the situation it's in now because they wanted to host everything and then some, and as it turns out some people with money (book publishers) didn't just dislike it enough to send DMCAs but to send lawyers to sue them.
Josh wanted to run a website that has info on everyone and anyone. The main reason Liz has a thread btw was Josh and pals wanted revenge on Liz for being behind the website's hosting issues and that poured gas on the fire. Liz still works at Honeycomb btw.
