What I find so funny about these articles is they pretend that there aren’t two fediverses. These people have to maintain humongous block lists of domain names just to preserve their utopian left-progressive atmosphere. It’s an uphill battle for them in spite of all their institutional support because any idiot with $5 and a domain name can go on Linode and just start their own. And they do.

Well, my main objection to these articles is that they don’t list alternatives. It’s not as though there is no market for the Wild West Internet that is dark fedi. It’s very obviously an effort to make it seem as though dark fedi just doesn’t exist, that it doesn’t count, that it’s non-existent. You know, like getting defederated from mozilla.social or whatever ejects whoever got defederated into the shadow realm or something.

In fact, I’ve noticed that people who are super quick to ban and defederate online seem to view those they get rid of from their timeline as being sent to some sort of gulag; it’s not that these people just continue with their lives talking to each other about whatever, it’s that they have Gone Away. Forever.

These same people tend to act shocked when half of the people they would want to defederate into oblivion live within shouting distance of them in matter world, and if they tried those kinds of tactics in said matter world, they would be the ones gotten rid of, and in short order.
