I remember the #FOSS community reaction claiming that Google used their #OpenSource hosting service, code.google.com, (eventually @killedbygoogle) to bend perceptions on licenses in ways that were favorable to them.

Personally speaking, this has always rubbed me the wrong way.
I think it set a bad precedent of for-profit entities using their platforms to shift public perception around #FOSS.
Sadly, I think others have followed in their footsteps and emulated this strategy.

@msw agreed. Nowadays, thanks to Google's and Microsoft's propaganda, 'open source' no longer includes Copyleft licenses. We now have to say Free(/Libre) and Open Source Software to cover the bases. I note that the corporates *never* say "FOSS", they're always OSS. Which shows where their loyalties/interests really lie. They're no friends of mine, for sure.

@lightweight @msw open source by itself (at least States & circles I frequent) is used in distinction to Free Software/FLOSS, this is due open core movement & permissive licenses that don’t respect user freedom as much as possible (BSD, MIT), &frankly, the efforts that some BSD / anti GNU folks do using the term in distinction to GPL / fs / floss & cozy up with corporate partners - disambiguation needed; on own= negative connotation @lightweight

I don't hear that skewed usage when I'm out representing OSI in Europe. Do you have any data to back up the assertion? @osi certainly does not treat open source as excluding reciprocal licensing, tacitly or expressly.

@byterhymer @oemb1905 @lightweight This policy goal is important enough to have accumulated some amount of time, attention, and dedication to the effort to convince the broader community why they may want to consider selecting a BSD-like license instead of GPL.
Again, nothing wrong with this in my mind. It is useful for developers to be informed by many diverse opinions.

@oemb1905 Hi BSD folk here, what makes you think we're anti GNU?
We dig UNIX. We sure as heck didn't make an acronym indicate otherwise.
But I don't just dig BSDs, ISC is wonderful too! MIT also acceptable. I was administering systems based around public domain code before FSF and GNU even existed. Which I realize means in some places the WTFPL is preferable because they don't even acknowledge public domain as real (IANAL but w/e).
This reads as unnecessarily hostile?

@byterhymer @oemb1905 @lightweight Trying to frame clinically, communities like FreeBSD have mindfully adopted policy that biases against copyleft licenses like GPL, and have dedicated efforts to remove GPL dependencies.
There's nothing /wrong/ about that, in my mind. It's great to have many options in a diverse #FOSS ecosystem.

@webmink I'm based on the other side of the earth, but all the promo out of LF and MSFT among other self-avowed "open source-friendly" mega corporates that always references #OSS, never #FOSS (don't recall seeing the OSI refer to FOSS) which seems to implicitly exclude #Copyleft which those player all obviously see as anti-business (which is clearly code for exploitable in *proprietary* software). @osi @msw

@webmink @lightweight @osi @msw Well, I recall a few conversations by proponents of permissive licenses back in the 90s when the distinction was last pushed, and the explicit message of permissive licenses was "open for business, unlike copyleft".
Which means that skewed perception actually predates the use by Google et al, but Google certainly attracted a lot of people from the same camp in the beginning. I wouldn't consider either...
