     It's something more than the cellphones we've seen the effects of that for years now, this is different. There is a malaise over everything and it's a mixture of it being winter and there just being something really "off" to me.

     @SrbijaStronk I get the sense that a lot of millennials have dropped out of society, given that there’s no cheese at the end of the maze for most of them.
     
     For Gen Z, it’s probably more to do with an over saturation of social media/smartphones, along with increased diversity destroying social cohesion

     @DW2 I am literally the only youngster, or really the only person period, who rides on a bicycle around my area for fun. Absolutely nobody else has as simple a hobby.

     @DW2 Right on the money, the only zoomers i have interactions with are my family at like once a year family functions. One of them is showered with family money for trips all over the world, the other was homeless for at least a year and crawled himself out of poverty despite everyone not giving him a hand beyond a place to stay for a couple months. The only kids i see running around are at the stores at off hours trying to avoid as many people as possible. It's dire.

     @DW2 “Those damn kids on their phones” misses the point, that the only place that young boys are even sorta allowed to have a male space is under the veil of anonymity online.

     They want community, but every place has been infested by secret police looking to burn you for the slightest political infraction. More than a few kids do have interests and hobbies, the smart ones just keep it under wraps and pretend to do “nothing”.

     When I was in HS and even college for a time, I used to try and short-circuit those convos with “ah, I don’t have a job, I don’t really do anything” because I didn’t see much point to talking about hobbies. Now that there’s a whole bunch of identity attached to everything under the sun - video gaming is just nazism, after all - they’re keeping it under wraps so they don’t accidentally fly any flag at all

     You can't have a hobby these days without politics being shoved down your throat.
     Even knitting groups on Facebook aren't safe.
     And most kids aren't savvy enough to find a dissident social environment.
     
     Social media showing you 1000 people that are far more talented than you will ever be.
     
     Both of these factors together are extremely demoralizing for anyone starting a hobby, or looking for anything to care about.

     @DW2 It used to drive my family crazy, because it didn’t let them brag about their “successful” son. Now? Sheesh, everything under the sun will send up a team identifier and alter the treatment you receive from everyone around you.

     I did that thread a while back where the dad explained that his kids basically say as little as possible in class, just 1-word answers, because everything is so fraught with politics. I think a lot more are running silent, like philosophical u-boats than you’d believe.

     @DW2 Lepa Sela Lepo Gore, you can find it on youtube atm, somehow it hasn't been taken down. Be warned though, it's a dark comedy from the balkans, so there happens to be stupid shit like sex stuff next to kids to show how shitty a childhood the main character had. It's a little too much.

     @DW2 My company brings in high school kids for part time work a couple months out of the year, most of the kids seem intelligent and are concerned about their individual futures. But almost everyone at the company who's in their 20s is a total burnout, can't be bothered to show up on time or even show up everyday, and they always smell like weed.
     
     One 20 something I got hired in with would talk about how much he needed money as he had no family and was staying at a shelter, he seemed to like the work but he was gone in a week. Same thing with a lot of other guys whose names I never even learned.
     
     I'm not criticizing them, I've walked out of jobs before, but never for the petty reasons those guys did. And if nothing else I at least have family to help me if I need it, these guys have nothing and seem to realize their futures are bleak. It's sad but I don't know what to do for them.

     @PraxisOfEvil @DW2 I feel for them. Can’t imagine how bad it is on the bottom rung, I’ve gotten rugpulled as a “professional” when the job you start isn’t the job you promised.

     Salary? benefits? Uh…..oh…they must have uh…told you wrong. It’s contract now. But you have to remain as accessible as you did before!!!

     @WashedOutGundamPilot @DW2 I've had the bait and switch pulled on me before, a couple days in you're doing the job you were hired for and then suddenly they're short in another department and you wind up helping out there. Before you know it you're a month in and haven't done anything close to the original work. Oh, and what's this? Turns out you can't get the rate you were promised because your training isn't complete!
