      @itzpaquet @tost @Moon Parties aren't really part of the constitution. Technically there is nothing preventing us from having 0 parties, but I think that would be very difficult to enforce as people would naturally create groups around ideas about governing.

      @thatguyoverthere @itzpaquet @tost parties are kind of ingrained in the law at every level though, which is fucked up. for example, in the USA third party candidates used to run on multiple party tickets as a way to get past the duopoly but eventually the two big parties cooperated to get that made illegal in every state despite no practical reason to make it illegal, just "this hurts us so fuck you"

      @Moon @itzpaquet @tost it's not a surprise that the law makers have enshrined the duopoly (I am of the belief that's really a monopoly) and I think it's natural and unavoidable to eventually see them coalesce as you say because nearly everyone in politics is looking for power and larger groups have more power. It's just not dictated in the constitution, and multiple founding fathers had less than favorable opinions of party politics.

      @itzpaquet @tost @thatguyoverthere it's a little vague because statistics and poly-sci wasn't invented yet so the model that that first past the post leads to two parties wasn't broadly understood yet. As mentioned it appears some people understood this though.
