@jas that's very fair. There are other ways to interact with Mastodon users. Pleroma was not only designed to work hand-in-glove with the Mastodon API, you can even use Mastodon's frontend with it.
Shitposter Club, the eighth most banned instance, has a functioning frontend for those who still want it after 2.5.0's release.
It's also much simpler and does not require large waivers of trust. All prerequisites for Pleroma are in the official stable and oldstable repositories for Debian.
I know that's not something many Mastodon users want to hear, but Pleroma also has better performance because it stores AP objects raw, which makes a difference compared to changing the context server-side.
Pleroma is simpler, and actually safer when configured correctly. And if you don't want 5000 characters, you can not only limit it to 500, you can drop posts that exceed that count from AdminFE.
@masstransitkrow Setting up a mastodon instance appears to require trusting several packaging systems of various quality, each with unclear security properties. When can I install a self-hosted mastodon server the same way I install, say, a self-hosted ssh or DNS server on a Trisquel (or Ubuntu, RHEL etc) system? As far as I understand, the software stack is not stable enough for that to be feasible, which is my concern.
@masstransitkrow I didn't see a question nor anything that I felt a need to followup on, hence no reply. Thanks for your comment and sharing of Pleroma help!
