@KoopaTV Which is a big deal, since minors are easier to manipulate and get hooked. It's also way easier to reach large numbers of people through modern technology. Obviously the idea of going after big spenders as a business model is nothing new, but mobile gaming highlighted how lethal such a model could be in combination with smartphones.
@ArdainianRight The gambling industry was hunting for whales long before mobile gaming existed, and I think is the originator of the whale hunting business model to begin with.
All mobile gaming did was bring that model to people under 18, legally.
@KoopaTV Also note that stuff like Pokemon slot machines gave kids experience with gambling and the dangers associated with it without actually costing them real money, but that's no longer allowed while real gambling is aggressively pushed.
@William_The_Dragonborn@KoopaTV That's a consistent theme among NPCs in Pokemon games. Also the original Game Corner was literally owned by Team Rocket.
@KoopaTV@ArdainianRight Back when I was a teenager I worked in a video arcade and found it very strange that we were legally allowed to run what were essentially slot machines that dispensed "tickets" that could be traded for goods at a counter. Gambling is apparently cool and legal so long as you target children!
@caekislove@KoopaTV 5 dollars to play an amusement park game you have a 1 in 500 chance at winning where the prize is a 10 dollar plushie. Many such cases!
