What a revelation. If you actually pay developers money you might get good code. Not random slopoid from volunteers that don't give a shit.
Anything good you're seeing in Linux was paid for by some company or entity and you're just reaping the benefits downstream. Simple as.-

You said "Anything good you're seeing in Linux was paid for by some company..."
What company paid for ext4?

@splitshockvirus
I mean yeah with lower level code there is good free stuff, but for higher level stuff it's not the case. -

@splitshockvirus @lina @charlie_root >tfw i "own" my car even though i pay payments
People who think title means total ownership are the same one who go into debt extra debt and lose everything becuase they own nothing. -

Yeah of course the contracts are long, because they need to cover their ass.
A lot of debt slavery (and by that I mean actually debt slavery not the bullshit people on fedi talk about) in 1800s England was enforced through complicated contracts with clauses the imply repayment through labor should you be unable to fund whatever it is you bought.
Now if you are the average illiterate Englishman realistically you shouldn't sign anything but people still did. See previous post for the lesson on this matter.

It's really simple, a company can tell you they will sacrifice your first born son to Moloch in the EULA and you'll click accept because you want to listen to Spotify without ads after paying $6.96/mo
And then get surprised when their first born child is sacrificed to Moloch. It's simple if you don't like the terms don't agree to them.

@splitshockvirus @charlie_root ah but yeah, here's the thingie, you don't really get to sign a tos with phones, and then they have been making their terms of service as long and difficult to read as possible that nobody actually reads them, so they have a lot of ways to weasel out of responsibility -

@splitshockvirus @charlie_root that'd be all fine if the companies funding linux projects weren't known for mining and selling data of their users i don't feel at home with the fact these companies owe me millions by now AND that data could get into the hands of a malicious third party because who the fuck cares who sells to who -

Usually for two reasons, there's something to be gained or people are tempted (have impulse control).
You have something to gain if you take out a $100,000 in stock equity on a position that you know is going to 4X in price within the next three months, at which point you don't care about paying 8% on that 100k . You have an enormous potential to gain an extra 300k. The bank gets paid regardless so obviously they have something to gain. But at the same time you have a lot more to lose in this situation than the bank because your position could also not grow or at worse go down. So if you wanted to keep a Biblical theme that would be greed.
The other is similar to gluttony at least I consider impulse control to be similar to that. "I want the latest $1000 smartphone but I don't have $1000 to spend but fortunately this 24 month 0 percent APR financing is let's me get it now". You get a phone, and the bank gets their 2.7% fee from the store.
I'm guilty of using both sins but I believe for more calculated reasons (I'm trying to scam the banks and game the system), but ultimately it doesn't matter which of these it is, a credit card still comes with an huge pamphlet which every which way they will rape you if you don't pay on time, which I also don't read but never need to since I don't miss payments and live below my means.

@splitshockvirus @charlie_root and instead of shouting at the devil and breaking his horns off everyone in the modern world is just continuing to sign his contracts :ryukoergh: -

Devil works in contracts, God works in Covenants.
If you sign a deal with the devil don't be surprised if you end up in hell.
It actually is that simple.

Tldr, the financial term is leverage, but it's not really a good idea in most situations.
I meant to say the $100,000 is taken out on margin essentially a short term loan so you can buy stock.
