@complicatedRegrets @Awoo @IAMAL_PHARIUS Full power from a fully functioning mobile space battle station won't vaporize a planet. It's scare propaganda. Vaporizing that much silicate and iron takes the power of a star, and while the Empire does have some pretty astounding wonderweapons (a Star Destroyer's bombardment can turn a planet into a uninhabitable wasteland), they don't have anything approaching the destructive power of a star going nova. What it did do is overcome the binding gravity of the planet. It didn't vaporize; it exploded. That's why the former orbit of Alderaan around its parent star is filled with a massive debris field.

However, the stories of corpses in space are apocryphal. In fact, any bodies would be incinerated as the atmosphere was ignited during the blast, and the remains would be pulverized as the planet shattered.

As for your claims of 20% of the surface being habitable, remember that Alderaan had modern farming techniques, permitting a support population of nearly 70 billion, so there's plenty of room for a mere two billion.
