somewhat lethargic post: how's matrix (the chat infra) going these days? i/we are looking for alternatives to telegram (for obv. reasons) and signal, which is almost ok but suffers (at least for me) from loss of history when migrating devices/installs and diversity of clients, i.e. still no official arm64 desktop client. is matrix 2.0 already there, and how stable is that stuff? or is there something else you'd recommend? (deltachat?)

mega strong security/encryption is not my main use case for this btw, it's mostly about low key relationships/friends/family chat stuff

@mntmn FWIW signal is apparently adding history migration but I still think the software is lousy, desktop backup/restore doesn't exist afaict and the API has a core primary device built in so your phone is the primary in almost all cases.

@mntmn I like it, but it's a little tough to convince the uninitiated to sign up.

@scy i'm not well organized enough to reliably handle a process such as this over years :D

@mntmn What's the issue with migrating history? Serious question. My Signal history goes back at least six years now, migrating has never been an issue.
The app creates an encrypted archive on my phone every night, I sync that to another machine using Syncthing. When my phone dies, I provide that encrypted archive and the password to the new device when setting up Signal there. Done.
I can even decrypt it and browse the SQLite database with my messages when I want to.

@mntmn Why not asking Signal to finally offer an arm64 Version oft their messenger? As I will be a proud owner of the MNT Reform Next in about half a year, I will need a fitting desktop-version, too! And there will be plenty of other arm64-linux-users, soon!

@mntmn @scy i got bitten by a weird edge case in signals "multi-device" logic... if you don't use a desktop client for two weeks, it will be kicked and you need to re-link it once you regain access. It will not get access to the old history, though...

@mntmn I'm a fan of matrix. Generally works well for me and the infrastructure is where next gen chat needs to be

@mntmn I use matrix with element client often, element client have both mobile and desktop applications and it is very good.
My therapist also use these combination.
In element you can create chat rooms also grouped those chat rooms into a space.

@mntmn okayish from my experience
my Element experience with many convos is that it takes 5 mnutes to load the app, both on phone and laptop
and if you have an encrypted room with dozens of people, every now and then some messages from some people cannot be decrypted by some others, so I recommend to turn off encryption for larger rooms
oh and notifications do not work properly, only for some rooms/convos, sometimes
there are also rooms that stopped bubbling for me on my phone, same for my gf...
