@sneeden Telling him exactly this on his lina alt got me blocked. I think it's enough. I'm very doubtful but maybe he will finally understand after the creator himself told him basically the same thing. -

@theorytoe @sneeden Marcan is the quintessential Rust shill after most of them died out. -

I genuinely don't understand the point of language proseletization beyond "I like it and think its good"
because literally every other praise you can have for it may be a downside in a particular context† top dog :pedomustdie: likes this. -

@theorytoe @sneeden It happens when people make language X their personality and go beyond the right tool for the job. You can see it in Rust, Python, Go, C,... Basically everywhere. The difference is the number of those people. † top dog :pedomustdie: likes this. -

@dcc @theorytoe @sneeden I didn't say best. I said right and that also implies, at least to me, the right one for me personally. Meaning, I will choose Y over X, even though X is probably better, but I don't know X much, so Y is more "right" to me. -

@sun @theorytoe @sneeden In the end I think Rust will not become big in the kernel. One of the reasons is the behavior of the Rust devs to the Linux maintainers and the other reason is that the language isn't prepared for it yet.
In the end, it paints a bad picture for others that (want to) use the language. Because in some instances Rust makes sense to use, but dealing with the community isn't always "fun" and worth it. -

in all fairness, I would rather work with rust than c++
however the community around it is so big of a turnoff that I would rather work with c++ -

@phnt @theorytoe @sneeden oh yeah I posted recently about the rust thing. it's simple entryism. first you say lets us contribute, then you say change how you do things, then you say if you don't change how you do things, we're going to replace you -

An lkml thread devolved into discussions about Hector Martin's somewhat frequent brigades on his fedi main account about how Linux maintainers make it harder for him to change pieces of code outside of what he maintains. You've probably seen at least one of them on his marcan@social.treehouse.systems account or the asahi@vt.social account. At least that's the gist of the full thread that is really long.

Months ago I've replied to one of his brigade post on the asahi@vt.social account that was talking about some drm job code and how hard it is to work with it from Rust. If I remember correctly he was calling for removal of maintainers that don't fully support Rust in the kernel or that don't accept his changes to the non-rust code. Or something like that I don't really remember it that clearly anymore.
I basically replied with something very similar in tone to what Linus said. Something along the lines that complaining about it on social media won't improve anything and that it might actually make it harder to come to a good solution/conclusion with the maintainers. That got me instantly blocked.
Later someone other joined from the Linux drm team (I think the username was something like lyude@something), we had a somewhat reasonable discussion and they ended up muting me and deleting their replies few days later for whatever reason.
That's basically the whole context of what I said.
As for the shilling of Rust, he's been known doing that for some time since the Asahi project started. I don't know if he still does it, because social.treehouse.systems defederated me more than a year ago and they have signed fetch enabled meaning I don't see anything coming from there.
And I have the Asahi Lina account muted for reasons of drama brigading and being generally just spam to me. So I don't know about anything from there either.
