The problem is, nobody knows about the alternatives and the alternatives attract low quality people (see nostr). Nostr has the same issue Gab did where more people talk about using it than using it.
I wish more people were outraged over the fact that we let a handful of big corporations completely take over email for profit with few if anyone uttering a word of protest about what was happening.
The problem is normies raised in post AOL walled garden internet do not care. They only care about two things, does it work and is it easy for their retard brain to use. That's it.
Look at the J6 boomers, they carried their cell phones and didn't even wear masks. Normies get what they deserve. You can try to educate the normie, but look how everyone makes jokes about Linux shills from /g/ here. It won't work unless you dumb it down just as much (see Soapbox and "Gleasonware")
It's more of the relationship between normies and autists IMO.
Case in point; the real secret to Steve Jobs and his success was twofold: he was a normie (not an engineer) and he was an idea guy.
He was one of those guys who would come up with an idea, and you had to make it happen somehow or your career was on the line. The iPhone was a great example, before the iPhone resistive touchscreens, IR touchscreens (think cash registers), and active pen touchscreens (Wacom, Windows Tablet PC) were the only ones on the market. He wanted you to be able to do the touch the screen thing.
He wasn't some techbro with far out on paper ideas or some engineer who lacks the ability to articulate to anyone who is a normie why this should be used. He was a normie who asked "why the fuck won't my computer do this and that" and had people wanting to suck his dick and implement it.
sometimes, the relationship between smart tech types and normies they champion reminds me a lot of the relationship between communist scholars and the working class
To add to that, social media has one massive problem getting your mom to switch to Linux doesn’t have (I made my mom switch to Kubuntu on her home desktop when Shitdows 10 was lagging her zoom calls); the peer pressure effect.
Look at Discord. A lot of /g/ tards assumed the reason that Discord got so big was solely YouTubers shilling it and making communities there but that’s missing the point. Discord got big for 4 reasons: [] Microsoft had absolutely run Skype into the ground after the buyout, which was characteristic of MS of the time (Nokia, Danger and the Kin, so many other products come to mind). [] Discord did not require you to sign up initially but it really, really, pressured you into singing up. [] Discord being a “webapp” means that you could log into your web browser and start chatting without having to download shitware, something normies have an aversion to after falling for too many “Eminem Lose Yourself.MP3.exe” scams. [] Discord was so easy a retard could use it. With just a few clicks someone who fumbled around Windows could create a server.
So then everyone and their daddy could make a Discord server, and as a result everyone signed up instantly. Discord is now one of the most popular chat platforms online. Naturally this would set the stage for Discord’s ban waves in 2017+.
But this one thing has as I mentioned in other threads and postings, caused a issue with trying to move people off of Discord. For years before Skype fell, nerds would try to move normies to XMPP/Mumble and these attempts would always fail. Normies would instantly feel unfamiliar and see no reason to use these programs and used any technical issue as an excuse to say “I hate this I’m going back to Skype”, and their refusal to move would mean you’re stuck there too. Then when Skype fell, everyone moved to the next walled garden online.
The only equalizer of course is ban waves and banning political dissidents. Jim sent tons of normies onto the fedi when he used Poast and so did Josh when he shilled it because his sites were down again thanks to the troon war. But Poast has the same issue mastodon.social has, for dissidents and those in this side of the fedi it’s the first site they sign up on. The only saving grace is Graf embraces the idea of starting your own instance much more than Eugen does, and he’s thankfully not in control of the code. He just has influence.
Musk can be too. The people who own Teslas around here are boomers, but usually the richer ones who want to be seen as trendier. The same goes with rich people in neighborhoods who want to bump their ESG scores up.
Look at who winds up sucking his dick. It's a very specific kind of person. He's the idea guy, but he probably managed to lobby governments into pushing EVs.
The thing that's striking about poast despite it's low amount of block counts is that both many of the instances blocked are kinda big in this sphere and many are done because they were fucking with the admin of the site. Dox materials in most cases is literally posting selfies of Graf or posting "The Nose".
Compare that with some of the worst canceldon instances and Poast is nowhere near the worst at blocking.
What I've noticed is more people (like Bot and the like) end up being individually defederated from Poast than instances end up being banned, moreso if said user is poking Graf a lot.
@PhenomX6@Prude@LordMordred@Hoss@fluffy i literally forgot what this thread was about, i think i brought up that eientei is blocked by poast because i didn't see a reply to fluffy at first
It depends on the autism, there's plenty of autist smart tech types with amazing ideas and a failure to convince investors/the normies (the Pebble IMO came out of this crowd), while there are a lot of failed VC/kickstarter projects that nobody wanted but they swindled investors (the OLPC, Ouya, battery hungry smartwatches that weren't Apple, etc.)
i would be more than a little bit upset if someone was posting my photos online and i didn't upload them publicly
at the very least if i had a large influential website then i would defederate from them. so i think graf did nothing wrong if the people he defeded were posting his selfies
To be fair, in many cases (such as ours), they were not posting his stuff from the outset, they were posting Borzoi's stuff after Borzoi went out of his way to start beef with others. It only became in part about Graf after Graf refused to laugh it off because Borzoi and the podcast race paypigs were too integral to the bottom line.
The podcasters were what Graf was using to try to boost his site, even though the podcasters carry years and years of baggage. I don't mean coming from antifa vigilantes, I mean from the "drama/IBS" scene and dumb shit they've said.
The irony is graf had a huge falling out with the guy whose wife was "the nose", so he cultivated a bunch of animosity toward himself and his instance for literally nothing.
Sad! I think many of us would be able to put the whole thing behind us if he just chose to do the right thing and dropped his pride regarding it, even this late in the game.
@PhenomX6@Prude@lina@LordMordred@Hoss@fluffy > They only care about two things, does it work and is it easy for their retard brain to use. That's it. In a world where everything gets more complex, stressful, i can't blame em
@fluffy@Prude@lina@PhenomX6@LordMordred@Hoss and even the techies are kinda uhhhhh fine i guess? definitely no eye to design, i need to learn that. And hell most smart people just use whatever works
