   I gotta do bitlocker recovery to get to safe mode, and it turns out I don't know the bitlocker recovery for this computer! UH OH

     I didn't even realize bitlocker was on. I didn't install this machine.

     FORTUNATELY I can still boot to regular mode, and then just ask windows what my recovery key is.

     (that's "manage-bde -protectors c: -get" in an admin prompt if you were wondering)

     also I'm tempted to build a keyboard just to type in this recovery key. You want me to type HOW many letters? I have computers for that!

     that's one thing I definitely need to make somehow for my Ultimate Workbench Keyboard: a way to copy-paste that goes into the keyboard. So you could copy the recovery key, reboot, and paste in the key.

     @foone Fun fact: There's a hidden timeout for typing the recovery key. I have more than a dozen drives, so finding the right key can take too long for Windows.

     I built the keyboard. I can just push a button on it and it pastes the key.

     it turns out the bitlocker screen is so early in boot that external USB devices don't work.

     which is weird. What if I was on a desktop? is it specifically limiting extra keyboards?

     @foone Wow that's crazy. What if the internal keyboard breaks? Bad design imho. 😅 I like using laptops as servers, especially semi broken ones. Giving them another chance at life. One of them relies on USB keyboard for disk decryption on boot..

     @foone I feel like that’s not all external USB devices, just ones that don’t implement boot mode? like, I’d think if it works in the UEFI config, it’d work in bitlocker?

     I’ve definitely used a USB keyboard to unlock bitlocker on my desktop after all

     (I hate that cursed thing about how USB keyboards work, with boot mode, though)

     @erik it's not the pin, it's the recovery key, which can be entered at an earlier phase of booting. I could enter it later. I think this is related to some EFI nonsense

     @foone I ran out of batteries so I decided to try to enter the key at startup (once I found a working power outlet).That worked with my external keyboard. Hence it's keyboard dependent (or there is a setting somewhere)

     @foone I regularly enter the bit locker pin with an external keyboard connected to a docking station. I wonder if it's just the key that is blocked, or if it is blocking some types och keyboards

     @foone it might depend on if the keyboard supports "USB Boot Protocol", a simplified HID interface designed for this sort of case.
