@caekislove@ZeroPointParadigm yeah, considering the size, is it even more efficient than a tree or is it another pointless environmentalism meme that will just make everything worse for the sake of it
-cost, which also goes with the second one ⤵️ -maintenance (a tree usually ain't much maintenance) -beauty (someone in the thread said they thought it was an unmaintained aquarium, it's not looking good here) -environment benefit (it has to basically completely blow out of the water everything else. So like 2000% or something efficiency over a tree)
" Each one contains 600 litres of water and removes the same amount of carbon dioxide from the air as two 10-year-old trees or 200 square metres of lawn."
@coolboymew@caekislove@ZeroPointParadigm given that you need processed metal and stuff which are high emission and you try to undercut a sapling, I say not good for the dirty aquarium
@coolboymew@caekislove@ZeroPointParadigm This is definitely a manmade horror, but one possible advantage is that it doesn't need space for roots. It's gotta be a pain to plant new trees in urban hellholes when you gotta tear up concrete to make room for soil
@ai@caekislove@ZeroPointParadigm yeah but the gain are extremely pathetic in that you might as well just bother planting real trees. You're basically just increasing your power/maintenance budget for no real gain in the end
Are you implying the tree stops being efficient if any of these are a problem (also, winter. Seems like these liquid 3 works in winter according to link. But how harsh of a winter?) In the end, are they still more efficient than 2 actual trees no matter the environment. If not, then it's REALLY not worth it
Then there's still the power and maintenance cost that's absolutely unknown
@coolboymew@caekislove@Granwalder@ZeroPointParadigm the only valid argument "for" a device like this over a tree that I could see might be that they are portable so if you want to redevelop the area in 30 years you don't need to cut down a tree.
I question their o2 production (and co2 sequestration) capabilities though. sure living algae produces o2, but dead algae will pull o2 from the water and produce co2 while it decomposes. That's one of the reasons algae plumes are a problem.
@coolboymew@caekislove@ZeroPointParadigm Speaking of maintenance budget... I wonder if their real product is to turn trees into a subscription service. Because another "advantage" of these festering aquariums is that they can be moved around at no cost. I'd bet the city pays a small ongoing fee to "rent" the trees, so there's no big upfront cost and no disruptive construction work. Stop paying the subscription, and all your soylent green fermentation boxes get confiscated.
The more I think about it, the more it seems like the only purpose for this product is to grift on subscription economics...
