fun fact: double-sided laserdisc players have a single ribbon cable that is used to let the read head flip upside down to read the top as well as the bottom.
the routing of that flex cable is fucking CRUICIAL
like don't get me wrong, I've also repaired laserdisc players without looking up manuals I should have (I repair a surprising number of laserdisc players for 2024), but you shouldn't make my mistakes
your laserdisc player probably doesn't have a belt. That's not how Pioneer made them (at least in the last decade or so, maybe some of the early players did)
The tray gears are probably the easiest to break. especially if the tray ever got stuck open, and someone tried to close it manually. That'll easily just destroy the track, which is plastic on many models
@gregly thankfully not (they just were adjusting some temporary DIY fixes they had added) but I still had a moment of OH GOD NO NOT THE DREMEL and I got 8-bit-guy flashbacks
@foone oh god I hope it’s not like when The 8-Bit Gun absolutely destroyed the leather handle of an old luggable (don’t remember which) by Retrobriting the case, exposing the leather to corrosive fumes
@foone If it had been just that stuff with him I’d have let it pass; god knows some of my early “restoration” or repair attempts were total nightmares… but his later “open-carrying an automatic weapon at the store to own the libs” video milkshake-ducked him faster than I thought possible.
