   @jenniferplusplus In privacy terms, yes, and even more in "let's get a noob situated" terms, too.

   I'm a geek, I had no problem with it. And I love it here. But a whole lotta people have been overwhelmed by what they feel is its complexity.

     @smallcircles @GeePawHill @jenniferplusplus I’m so confused, I thought corporate social media were part of the decentralised social web and were our friends. Look at how Meta and Mastodon are partners in the Social Web Foundation. Are you saying there’s something wrong with corporate social media? If so, you must be mistaken because if there was I’m sure Mastodon, Pixelfed, etc., wouldn’t partner with them… Am I missing something?

     If the switch from corporate #SocialMedia to decentralized #SocialWeb were frictionless already, then we couldn't handle the influx without losing said culture and see massive corporate takeover on the #Fediverse.

     In that light considering the definition of Social Web to be multi-protocol with e.g. #ActivityPub #Bluesky and others fits the bill best.

     Personally I discern a #Peopleverse (socio-cultural), a Social Web (socio-technical) and protocols (technical).

     Yes, the whole onboarding and #UX story for non-technical people leaves a lot to be desired. Yet I think the friction that exists is not bad per se. It takes time for the #FOSS ecosystem to mature and be able to handle "the scale of the masses" while also able to still support the socio-cultural aspects of the #Fediverse we hold dear. Culture grows slowly, and is only facilitated by having proper technological support.

     But you see my point? Doesn’t matter what we say when the sheep themselves proclaim the wolf a partner and not a threat.

     You know my position and where I put years of effort.

     There's a sad reality where the commons is now in a bad position to fend off a corporate takeover of fedi.

     But uptake on BS/ATProto may see corporate interest go there instead, and give some air to AS/AP fedi to mature & evolve more towards its full potential (which is well beyond a Microbloggoverse).

     Huge fly in the ointment is freaking Meta, positioned to pounce with an EE(E) whenever they choose to.
