   This is one of those things I suspect has roots in our dying dating scene in high school. A lot of these stories come from guys in their prime adult years, when they’re lessons they should’ve hashed out at 16. Now that everyone’s fat, weird, and cagey in HS nobody has those awkward, stumbling sexual interatctions where they learn that women don’t like being asked for permission - it’s weak, gay, and offensive. They want a guy who’s sociable enough to read her signals and body language and ride them on in with a sense of spontenaity.

     @ArdainianRight @WashedOutGundamPilot I know that firsthand. No one ever taught me how to actually socialize. I was instead told that retarded boomer adage of "Just be yourself. :^)" I tried doing that and people ended up thinking I was creepy.

     @fishsticks Yeah but come on. Guys may not innately understand female body language, but you have to be mentally lazy to never pick up on some of the signs. Having some empathy and thinking about it from her POV does wonders when you realize “wait, she’s looking at my mouth all the time, why is she leaning in so close? why’s she sitting like that, isn’t it uncomfortable?”

     Guys just don’t have it easy with the intrapersonal stuff, we don’t have thos e modules installed from the factory. We gotta build them ourselves

     @WashedOutGundamPilot Logically, I know women want a dude that doesn't ask for permission and takes life by force, both from personal experience and from guys telling me online, but I've seen one too many articles about guys getting arrested for saying hi to women to not ask unless it's extremely obvious they 100% want it (hand holding)

     @okuu @ArdainianRight “just be yourself” isn’t that dumb though, when you hear it from people who love you. Your parents, siblings love you, and don’t really see an accurate view of how prospective gfs do - to them you’re probably 80% more lovely than you really are.

     It’s well intentioned, but kinda dumb. The only time “be yourself” can summarize an attempt is when you’re telling a guy who’s well-liked, where the girl’s already signaled plenty of interest in him

     @fishsticks Well that’s why you need more clues and context. There IS a breed of lady where she’s simply passive and too nice, relatively inexperienced, who would take you up on things like ‘hey let’s hang out in my car after work’ who genuinely have no idea that’s a sexual offer of sorts. You should have the presence of mind to tread lightly in those cases.

     But the rest of the time, you should be able to figure out her interest level by your get together. Is she going out w/ you multiple times? Is she asking people about you at work? It’s easy to think about a totally missed message when everyone assumes the only sexual interaction you’d have with a woman is a one-off, single instance. Much easier to screw up when you’re airdropping right into a mystery moment

     See that's my issue. I worry myself sick because I'm meeting women off dating apps (yeah I know I'm already getting off of them). You really only have that one off impression and you're in the mystery zone half of the time because you don't know this woman but are both trying to set up another date and get her away from looking at another guy on these apps. Like obviously acting like a spontaneous schizophrenic is optimal, and really fun mind you, but the leway you have between ruining your life and getting another date is fucking thin, at least that's how it feels to me in the moment.

     @fishsticks Yeah, in those situations I’d gotten into just finding things I wanted to do, then invite them along to hang out and get to know each other. That’s why I love ikea, lots to do and low-pressure. Taking her to some faraway store and grabbing lunch in town was fun too. Dates such, lots of weirdness

     @WashedOutGundamPilot Yeah that is usually fun but it kinda sucks when you have minimal free time. Either I need to give up all of my free days to go on disappointing dates, with random disgusting women (can't always read that immediately from a bio), drive somewhere and go to weird dinner dates at like 9pm with someone I've never met, or do both if I really want to min max dating apps for some reason.
