The retarded US obsession with 'checks and balances' on Executive Branch power has ironically resulted in the flourishing of an unaccountable and consequence immune bureaucratic 'Deep State'. That has managed to entrench itself deeper than the Praetorian Guard ever did.
Once again: time-limited dictatorships and sweeping unilateral power to purge and rebuild the civil service are critical failsafes that need to be built in to a republican system with 'voting'. They are not bugs or anachronisms to he avoided.
