     @j No need to go out of your way, but like, anything that worked 10 years ago should be broadly supported, right? Theora codecs seem to crash, but that's open. h264 works but that's patent-encumbered; I usually use h264.

     @j It's apparently part of the patent grant; I don't know, I just know that mplayer didn't like it.
     
     (I guess at some point I will have to update my codecs.)

     @j Seems that way; proprietary codec, nominally open but use of it requires you to promise to not sue Google.
