   Hey I guess they’re slashing the F-22 fleet even more, gonna kill off 32 of the Block 20’s they’ve been using as non-combat aircraft.

   Good news though! They’ll….haha…..use that money for the even BETTER 6th generation fighter! Remember how that happened when they quit making the F-22? They wanted to buy more F-35s, because they’re “better”? That worked out great, so let’s go even DEEPER. Why even have a robot arm design before cutting off your arm? Go all-in!

     @WashedOutGundamPilot People criticize the F-35 program, and rightfully so, for being among the worst of Pentagon bullshit. The F-22 program I'd argue was just as poorly managed, and led to a capability gap so wide that the USAF is now buying new build F-15s to attempt to fill that gap.
     
     I have no doubt that if America lasts long enough for it's "New Century Series" to take flight that it will be just as much of an expensive boondoggle as all of their other programs.

     @NitroDubs It’s somewhat smart to just grab the F-15….from a logical, functional sort of view.

     But the F-22 has panache that nothing else does. It, like the F-35, is more myth than aircraft, and the way the F-22 presents in the minds of gullible normies, and political enemies, is just as important in peacetime as actual, raw performance is in wartime. The F-15 does everything we need a fighter to do, but you can’t send a message by deploying an F-15 unit next to a contentious border.

     @WashedOutGundamPilot This is all true. The F-22 has never engaged in an air-to-air engagement with anything even remotely similar in capabilities, and probably never will.

     @NitroDubs @Superber You say that now, but they’ve already admitted the F-22 replacement will cost, at least, “hundreds of millions of dollars per unit“

     The F-22 had its issues….but it was the last gasp of a dying breed of engineers, even stillborn

     @NitroDubs @WashedOutGundamPilot Yes, but the problem is that they cut the projected F-15EX buy drastically. They've added a few back, but it's still short of an effective force. And they can always cut again. Which they likely will. Need that money for the unobtanium to build their Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) "family of systems."

     @Hoss @WashedOutGundamPilot It's redline speed was always Mach 2.83. Panicking and exceeding that tends to end badly, though the pilot that did this over the Sinai did at least make it back to base.
     
     It's role was to be the end point of a long chain of ground and air based assets that lead to an interception. The way we did it and the way they did it were very different. A MiG-25 pilot's job was to follow ground controlled intercept commands to a point, burn through jamming with a ridiculously overpowered radar, and shoot incoming B-58s and B-70s with missiles as big around as telephone poles. Enemy fighters were not it's concern. And it did this while being made of welded steel.

     The best part is we only made it because we were freaking the fuck out about the Mig-25 which turned out to be a giant piece of shit. The Soviets fielded a meme plane and accidentally caused us to design the greatest fighter aircraft ever made as a counter.
