Thead about the Mario Kart characters and now the Koopa Kids were initially wanted, but then Nintendo went and just used them everywhere afterwards...
The biggest issue is that you end up having all these characters in 8, and nobody is interesting. Also overutilization as while everyone else is not there
All these faceless mooks when you could have characters from paper mario, Mario & Luigi, Mario RPG, DK, Luigi's Mansion, SMB2 (where is Wart?) and much, much more
Even as generic Mario enemies goes, you'll never see a Rex or a Dino Rhino as a character as a surprise. You'll never see the Dr.Mario viruses, Syrup from Wario Land, Piantissimo or even maybe even original Mario Kart universe OC because why the fuck not
It's just like New Super Mario Bros. It was just so terribly safe in a way, just so disappointingly safe
Thinking about it. On the N64 gen, all of this was new. Smash 64 had an exciting roster. Mario Tennis gave us Waluigi. Mario Golf gave us 4 OCs we never saw again. Things were kind of alive in a way
Now you get.... random enemies. Yay...
Actually the Dr.Mario mobile game got laughed at hard for going into ridiculous random enemies before going into actual Nintendo/Mario characters. Dr. Goomba totem? Are you fucking kidding me? How about goddamn Dr.Syrup instead?

@coolboymew The Dr. Mario mobile game was actually incredible. The Versus mode was a gem. It's a shame it didn't do well. And it's a shame that no one in the community figured out how to keep it alive after the shutdown.

@Rocket it was great? Damn, I slept on it

@coolboymew Yeah. The single player was predatory, but the multiplayer was great.
