Periodic reminder that the only reason there's a right wing in the US at all is because of evangelicals.

@CharlesSynyard @branman65 @not_benis @RaHoWaJoe Catholicism as a cultural label is just another instance of Catholics having no good way to course correct and shed dead weight until after it's too late. Catholic-race is a thing, and it's a reflection of them still clinging to the days when they were the ZOG of the middle ages.

There have been stories sounding the alarm like this for years now, even with the current Pope. God knew what he was doing saddling us with Francis.
A big problem with these surveys has always been that due to Catholicism’s sacramental nature and rich culture, people who rarely or never go to mass identify as Catholic at much greater rates than lapsed evangelicals keep their label. Those who regularly practice the Faith would more closely resemble evangelicals.
The worst thing US Catholics was be wets during the Temperance movement, but even the historic support for drinking has been overstated, as Catholics had their own anti-alcohol movement pioneered by Fr. Theobald Mathew. One parish near me even had a Temperance Hall at the time.

@Myles you know very well that among those Catholics there's a large number of Mexicans and South Americans who are migrants themselves, and even then 53% of those say immigration policy matters

@not_benis @Myles Dude has a point Myles.
The Catholic churches around me either look like nursing homes, or one of those urban fashion stores that know how to ring up shoes under WIC

@Myles neither side can claim a majority

@not_benis Catholic have historically been a solid Democrat voting bloc and a liberalizing influence. There's no denying this. Counting on Catholics to keep America American is pointless.
-
@Myles >Catholic, White: 72%
PURELY because of the evangelicals, sure
-
@not_benis A preponderance of Catholics vote Democrat.

@Myles @not_benis A number of protestant churches were the reason for the liberalization of marriage and normalization of divorce (contrary to scripture) and broken homes—very trad behavior from them. You can find everyone at fault for the mess that is modern America to some extent.
Also I'm not sure how Catholicism writ large is capable of liberalizing a nation founded upon classical liberalism. You could point to individual trends and situations that may have happened, but the idea that Catholicism (or any top down ecclesiastical church) is responsible for pulling a country who's founders where opposed to organized religion to the left is dubious, unless you see that preserving the legacy of the revolution as a right wing/conservative endeavor.

Whatever liberalism comes from that sector is pretty much always a racial issue that Catholicism as a faith was intended to suppress. Irish and Italian left-Caths don't meaningfully practice Catholicism, but instead are motivated by old ethnic resentments to get revenge on the ghost of the old WASP elite. Mexicans and other groups operate similarly. But the most faithful Catholics do in fact strive to assimilate and become good, patriotic citizens.
