     pretty much anything can be applied as a slur, and I have never, in all my years of watching US TV shows and films, many of which tackle historic racism in gory detail, has "spook" come up.

     "If someone says, 'Did you get spooked?' and there are no black people there, then, OK, you mean 'Did you get scared or frightened?' That's fine, I get it."

     But once you insert black people into the situation, Blake says, it's important to be more tactful. "We know that the word 'niggardly' doesn't mean a black person, but let's be sensitive. Are you going to use the word niggardly in front of a group of young students in a classroom? No."

     "Spook" was more northeast city slang. In the south you just called them -- well, you get the point.
     
     But it wasn't necessarily a hateful word either.
     
     I didn't get the "shadow beating" reference in a movie once either. Turns out it's LA slang. (Ironically, Russians use a similar word -- dukh, ghost/spirit/shadow -- for darker people.)
     
     There is no USA.
     
     There are regions of the USA...
