I dated this MTB granola chick for a time, and she always used to lust after gettin an S-works Stumpy, when I stupidly helped her figure out the mods for her “regular” evo (like $2,800 IIRC) it turned out she didn’t want the performance, or the ease, she just wanted that super fancy label slapped on the side so the other rich people at our fancy trail would be impressed by her

Replaced the seat with that gigantic super soft seat, handle bars with goofy upright handle bars, the works to make it the opposite of it's intended purpose 😂 -

Some of the intermediate parts are worth their cost, there’s a sweet spot of trickle-down where you lose enough weight for a marginal increase in cost, so the ‘upgrade’ is a good fit when you finally wear stuff out. The only truly shaking change I saw in an upgrade is wheel size, and even then it seems like many backed off from the huge 29ers. I still think a half 650b conversion is a good sweet spot.
But comparing a $12,000 mountain bike to a $2,000 one is silly, it’s all wasted. Just like a “track ready” porsche w/ nylon pulls for door handles and a sticker instead of a hood badge is wasted when the driver is 92 lbs overweight

blaaablaaaa (blaaablaaaa@hermit.cafe)'s status on Friday, 10-Mar-2023 09:01:50 JST blaaablaaaa I'm glad that I have finally been able to talk myself out of getting things like this. I always wanted those awesome bikes, then I realized I never rode enough to justify it and could barely tell the difference.
