mental meltdown (netdoll@ryona.agency)'s status on Thursday, 09-Mar-2023 16:20:57 JST mental meltdown @errante @hermit Ancient GamerGate lore (I hold the view that the cultural pressures leading up to it werent really a team red or team blue thing so much as a "internet atheism becoming too big for its britches" thing, but that's neither here nor there) -
Alex (hermit@hermitmountain.top)'s status on Thursday, 09-Mar-2023 16:21:20 JST Alex @errante I watched it happen. These people who have been radicalised now? They were just channers playing video games. Then they suddenly got attacked. "Gamers are dead," "I'm sticking my cold feminist hands into your hobby" and so on. It was a reaction. Then they came for incels, who at the time weren't even angry people, just sad guys who couldn't get laid. It hurt to watch. It sucked. I was already in love, already working towards a future with my wife, so I was less drawn in.
They became the monsters they got told they were. What a shock! Who'd have thought that would happen, right? Who'd have thought that if you just corner a group of people and keep calling them Nazis, they'd literally become them.
And it's just a cope, too. Go look at them. They adopt the iconography, the apparent signifiers, but it's skin deep. Below the surface they're just sad and angry weebs like they always were. Still getting jailhouse gay, still adopting the aesthetic of their favourite anime girls, still making excuses to ratify their actual identity with their professed ideology. Sure, it's pathetic to watch, and sure, I hate them for not being as strong as I was and being able to just reject it and go their own way without being subsumed. But the first blow was struck against them, they didn't strike out unprovoked.mental meltdown likes this. -
Arcana (arcana@pengi-san.moe)'s status on Thursday, 09-Mar-2023 16:30:58 JST Arcana @hermit @errante People are overly judgemental and lack a sense of humor outside of defined parameters. Are there people who go too far? Sure. But shitposting is not inherently bad.
I honestly have a different perspective in regards to this. I think it all ties into the fact that politicians forced the formation of the ESRB, and that the most weeb of games will never get rated—or else will be rated AO and thus be unsellable in many markets, which drives both censorship by publishers and rage on behalf of gamers who rightly abhor being sold a fraction of a game.

mental meltdown (netdoll@ryona.agency)'s status on Thursday, 09-Mar-2023 16:33:32 JST mental meltdown @arcana @hermit @errante This is all true, and executive meddling in other senses also sabotaged much of the console games market outside of Japan (e.g. the infamous no 2D dictates Sony pushed as a fashion), but what hermit is subposting here was the astroturfed gaming journalism narratives which started cropping up around 2013~14 and the reaction to them in GamerGate while they were beta testing the new hegemonic consensus ideology to force onto everyone they could. -
Arcana (arcana@pengi-san.moe)'s status on Thursday, 09-Mar-2023 16:33:56 JST Arcana @hermit @errante Fascists love to talk about censorship. What’s the most censored major media market? Video games.

Alex (hermit@hermitmountain.top)'s status on Thursday, 09-Mar-2023 16:45:06 JST Alex @arcana @errante Sure, that’s a factor. But I’m drunk so I’m gonna pop off: fuck Marxists. They can’t get their heads around the idea that people might have other priorities in life than balancing an equation. Their stupid cultural victory has to come first, above all else - even if it means thoroughly crushing individuality. And the horrible irony is that in pushing for their ideals, they create fascists, who resemble them in all but name. Only TOTAL cultural victory is good enough for either camp. They simply can’t accept the existence of people who deviate from their ideology at all. And what a surprise, they share a common root: socialism.
Evola was fucking right. Socialism exists just to finally kill both what he calls (somewhat disingenuously imo) “tradition” and the bourgeoisie, who have finally achieved their goal of eradicating “tradition” almost altogether. Look where their repugnant ideology leads: a future of figures in grey jumpsuits with shaven heads born in vats and assigned roles at birth. Mediating or accepting a “negotiated version” of this ideology might reap benefits in the short term - universal healthcare for example is a very powerful positive. But it can be arrived at without their cognition. I see it as anagolous to Christcucks and the “positive” aspects of their religion (“Love thy neighbour,” charity and so on.) The immediate benefits are apparent, so people who stand to gain from them, or who have gained from them, get subsumed into supporting the whole defective ideology.
People looking to overcome alcoholism turn to Alcoholics Anonymous for support and before they know it, they’re being told to accept Christ as part of the 12-step program. Similarly, working class people who benefit from unionization or free healthcare (and I don’t care what libertarians say, it IS functionally free, all governments require taxation and universal healthcare is a fucking good deal) are quickly drawn into advocating for communism, without realising where it will ultimately lead them.
The shepherd and the sheep. It’s a timeless motif.
It sucks. I really believe in helping the vulnerable and challenging systemic structures that oppress and marginalize them. But this is not the way. It never was and it never will be. It’s just another turn of the screw towards the total death of individual meaning. It’s repugnant.

Arcana (arcana@pengi-san.moe)'s status on Thursday, 09-Mar-2023 17:16:58 JST Arcana @errante @hermit For context: Both of these game franchises feature Nazi characters who are integral to the plot.
Wolfenstein 3D came out in the years immediately preceding the formation of the ESRB. Dies Irae came out well after and is only sold in its more recent, censored variant on Steam (although the original R18 version is sold on MangaGamer).

Alex (hermit@hermitmountain.top)'s status on Friday, 10-Mar-2023 05:26:42 JST Alex @netdoll @arcana @errante It's inevitable I think. We drift into the circles we drift into based on apparent factors, modes of speech, interests. Inevitably we end up associated with people who oppose some core belief of our own in a fundamental way, and sometimes they form the majority of our circle. In hanging out with them, we get labelled as part of them. And all the while, others are seeking to pigeonhole us as one thing or another based on superficial factors like our preferred vocabulary or taste in memes.
I think individuated humans feel innate resistance to this. Sooner or later they feel obliged to speak out.mental meltdown likes this. -
