They lived near or literally above the shop. No 2 hour round trip commute dealing with metal boxes of death. They could work 14 hours a day, because they didn't have to do autistic laser focus for 14 hours. They weren't on a time clock and they weren't getting being studied like ants by busy body "scientific management" specialists. They had all sorts of holidays and festivals they would take off, or market days where they would go haul crap to the market instead of sitting in their shop.

But pretend I agree with you in that everyone is being forced to work way too much for far too little and living conditions and standards are worse than any other time in history, what do you propose should be done to fix it?

     @justinerickson @LukeAlmighty @WashedOutGundamPilot We should move somewhere between the old craft work model and the new industrial mass production model. We should roll back some of the antihuman scientific management practices. We should push people to live very close to where they work. We should undo planned obsolescence. Not everything should be mass produced because not everything needs to be; and in having a blended model, we would be less wasteful, have better goods, and have basically full employment.
     
     There are "good" things about the past 60 or so years, but a lot of them are tainted. You have far less people farming which seems good, but the trade off is using foreign farmhands, which turned in short order to a general condition of scab labor throughout the economy, as well as huge amounts of industrial poisons being dumped on the landscape in the guise of bug and weed control. Really you want a healthy peasantry that is mostly lightly mechanized rather than what we have now, but that means having about 15% of the workforce give or take in farming rather than less than 2%. We do have plenty of food, but a lot of the food is dubious in quality and produced by a cartel which in turn is probably integrated with the broader oil-banking nexus (basically the core of the modern industrial economy).

I know where these guys are coming from, and it’s a nice sentiment to have, but they just don’t realize that the rest of the world doesn’t have the same high-minded, genteel attitudes we’re inclined to.

     Every other country on earth is flooding us with the lower rungs of their society - survivors, people who won’t have anywhere near the same hesitation to slit some throats to live as the majority of “righteous patriots”. They’re living in a fantasy land where kindness can be counted on to be reciprocated, where the goodness of other humans is something you can rely on.

     I foresee them passing away thinking liberty is secured, only lightly infringed here and there - y’know, the ol’ “well don’t do THAT, even if it’s unconstitutional they still banned it!!! Not worth the court battle!“. They’re one of the few things that the system’s cadre of human-shaped monsters actually have to handle with care. They’ll continue to carve away at every “freedom” they have left, and guys like this will tell their sons that “the stuff is buried in the woods, someday you’ll have to use them when the tyrants overstep their bounds”, whiling away their lives while the government gives them just enough exceptions and grandfatherings that they’re comfortable.

You could not as an artisan compete with cheap and nasties. You could not as a small farmer compete with agribusiness farms (which were expanding with subsidies, cheap credit, and synthetic inputs). All of these crafts have become the reserve of the rich while the proles are stuck with cheaper and cheaper mass produced dreck. You know if you're genuinely rich and you're probably not.

     We don’t even really cound the kids in the family until they have children. Right now, I would likely get a fraction of what my sister would since I don’t have kiddos. It’s all about family, what’s best for the family, what secures the family, etc. I guess that’s love. We’re the only people we can trust in most respects.

     Planned obsolescence and squeezing out every last bit of productivity are made necessary by the need to pay interest, for big line to continuously go up. Ultimately they are the consequences of debt based currency.

History buffs and old people are increasingly adding to the family tree, some places online will let them fill it out, so you might have some enthusiastic old timer in the family steeped in family history. I know a guy who just got a book from his grandma, she “didn’t know what it was” and it’s a history of their ancestors, with wills, diaries, and stories going back hundreds of years. Someone in the family printed a run and sent it to her and she just rolled her eyes at it and threw it on the shelf to be left forever.

     I think we've already lived through the great times makes softmen softman make hard times and now we are just entering the hard times make hard men.
     
     The older generation isn't invested in that next step of making great times. I've talked to many people over the age of 50. I've talked to many people over the age of 60... They all seem to say the same things, and it's all quiter talk.
     
     They want to go about the end of their life doing what they want because they've already sacrificed whatever it is they went through before we were ever born and fuck us and anything that happens to us because of what they had to go through to get to now.

It's going to be a bit of the old and a bit of the new, brought together in a way that is better for life rather than abstract economic indicators or some thin rich slice of the population. Understanding this requires an honest reckoning with the industrial revolution and the industrial process which is rare among moderns, who assume that these are unalloyed goods (they are not).

I know someone who took a 50% pay cut for religious reasons. I also know someone who was miserable in their job but was willing to stay for a pay rise equal to a twenty year old car. We're at the point where most of society tacitly admits that it's better to have never have been born than to be raised poor. That physical hardship (be that pain or homelessness) is worse than death. People would rather a 3 week holiday to the divine gift of children. Every politicians gets a carte blanche if the economics are strong. It's just assumed that everyone has a price, and government policy reflects the ide that you can just bribe poor people into doing whatever you want
     
     What we need is to raise our children to break away from this and value life over comfort. To value longevity over depreciation of taxable assets. If you look at the most successful economies of the 20th century NONE of them were actually liberal free market economies. All of them from America, to Japan, Korea, China, German, and Singapore were all pseudo fascist economies and the more fascist they were the better they did.
     
     The only way forward, and what we need to encourage (LOCALLY):
     - protectionist policies over industry (with the goal of creating a trade surplus)
     - development that improves human capital (e.g. simple manufacturing building to complex manufacturing)
     - directed investment into sovereign and useful industries (E.g. resource extraction vs tourism)
     - preferential treatment of local industry (i.e. in tendering)
     - pipelines and cultural attitudes that guide children to long careers in productive industry (e.g. don't treat the trades as dumping grounds for retards)
     
     All that being said, without collective systematic change all of this will be for nought. But in the chicken egg scenarios I think local aristocracy come first
