@crunklord420 You once mentioned that you have setup a media server for someone on Beelink. Did you use Ubuntu on it? or what?
-
@Saxophone3784 it was a cheapo N100 (not a beelink), and I installed Arch on it along with Plasma+Jellyfin+Kodi.
I configure it so it autologins to Plasma and launches Kodi. To be used with a wireless touchpad+keyboard controller. Jellyfin for streaming to other devices. Make sure to verify your Intel QuickSync feature is working for Jellyfin, you need a specific set of non-obvious packages (check the arch wiki).

@Saxophone3784 $200 is kinda the average price for a 16GB. Beelinks are just significantly more expensive for a unknown reason.
-
@crunklord420 Thanks! There is just a large discount on a beelink n100 making it just 200 bucks. So I was considering taking it for Jellyfin+email+xmpp+backup server

@Saxophone3784 I think a N100+16GB RAM for ~$175 is a deal that's hard to beat, especially regarding it's extremely low power use and the integration of quicksync hardware transcoders can make it punch above it's weight for dealing with video. I think it'll work fine as long if you can make your CCTV take advantage of the hardware transcoders, and have low use XMPP/Email.
-
@crunklord420 do you think an n100 is a good idea if i want to additionally run a cctv server on it? I am thinking Jellyfin+CCTV+XMPP+Email+Backups of important data all on the single machine.
Or do you think it is a better idea to split it?
-
@Saxophone3784 I tend not to use docker unless I have a good reason to do so. Just have good filesystem permissions. No need to add extra overhead to a low power use minipc.
-
@crunklord420 Would you use docker containers for these cases? I am somehow completely reluctant to use any.
-
@Saxophone3784 Linux from Scratch
-
@crunklord420 Thanks I thought the same way. To be honest my plan is for now to test some stuff in a VM, then slowly move to the N100. I know linux in general, but cant use it full time due to work stuff. I wanted to use VirtualBox to test some stuff, install CCTV/Email servers and get them running. Do you think VirtualBox is ok for that? or you would suggest some other approach?

@crunklord420 Would you recommend arch or gentoo if i really want to understand well how linux functions?

@Saxophone3784 qemu or vmware
