of nothing (apropos@fsebugoutzone.org)'s status on Monday, 29-Jul-2024 02:44:04 JST of nothing @sun @lucy @mint @takao it's generational, but more in the Game of Life sense than the colloquial political sense. Things turned to shit because the prior order was upheld by a set of ideas that failed to propagate to future generations. We had open systems and open protocols and lightly moderated distributed platforms because that's the internet that most of the people on the internet wanted.
But it's all very easy to abuse, and once the abuse ramps up people stop wanting the abuseable systems and it becomes easy to sell other ideas with shadowbanning and algorithms.
Once upon a time if a guy had my phone number he could call it and I'd pick up and we'd have a conservation. Now I get 100+ scam calls a month and never pick up the phone ever. -

Angry Sun (sun@shitposter.world)'s status on Monday, 29-Jul-2024 02:44:05 JST Angry Sun @apropos @lucy @mint @takao you guys can frame it as generational but it really was just that everything turned to total shit. -
of nothing (apropos@fsebugoutzone.org)'s status on Monday, 29-Jul-2024 02:59:34 JST of nothing @mint @lucy @sun @takao "just wait until this generation grows up" is eternal. There's a Doonsbury comic strip about our current deep state, tearfully applying to join the Clinton administration which is their generation finally coming to power and stopping all the dumb wars.
All I heard as a kid was that things would change once people who really understood the internet got into power. If there's a difference its probably that people who think they understand the internet are less cautious about legislating it to force "click here to accept cookies". and † top dog :pedomustdie: like this. -
(mint@ryona.agency)'s status on Monday, 29-Jul-2024 03:04:02 JST @apropos @lucy @sun @takao The gap of people who know how uppercase I Internet works is rather small. There's been 10 to 15 years at best between it achieving noticeable adoption and getting fully commercialized by FAGMAN who now serve the same purpose as old world TV/media conglomerates did. Can't see it getting any better in my remaining lifetime. -

can high social trust survive the information age?
obviously not. And there is no hard kinetic solution to phone scams, just as there is no hard kinetic solution to internet filter bubbles or hate speech or thot-face propaganda strategies. So post-liberal revaunchism is a doomed solution unless an EMP happens. likes this. -

I think that the knowledge of the uppercase I internet and uppercase OS operating systems is going to be a marketable skill in for as long as modern civilization (pre-EMP) exists.
Even if unmoderated and decentralized apps become inaccessible to the masses, they will always be accessible to all telecom, finance, and business IT professionals (and uni students for those fields), which skew male. likes this. -

The open Internet no, but it was a false dream based on naivety regarding people.
Torrenting is still alive with some very active communities.
I no longer think that it's the technology itself that gave us the golden age of the internet, it was the people using it. And you can get this kind of people together again, this time also accounting for all the mistakes that happened. likes this. -

For what it's worth, I've learned a bit about BAP-ism and for what I can tell, it's just wishcasting for a global EMP (basically). Not going to happen, in my opinion, it's just a cringe fantasy LARP.
There is a variation, of basically non-EMP, soft-BAP. One of the lovely angel investors of the information age (won't name him here) published a lengthy X thread where he said that future generations of the fairer sex will be more or less resistant to Internet disease vectors, as a matter of procreation selection bias. likes this.
