@Griffith Many of them were masonic deists so it wouldn't really surprise me if that were true. The Roman Republic and the Greek city states that the enlightenment thinkers love to present as the liberal ideal, while far from theocratic, were not secular states, nor where they ones concerned with universal "rights". Liberalism is a myth.
While NS may be a foreign ideology, so too was enlightenment liberalism when it was enforced upon the people of this land from the top down. People fixate too much on the source of ideals and not enough on their fruits.
Although the concept of an ideological population is another question onto itself entirely, being a rather modern phenomenon, and is worth dissecting.
