   More on my particular fascination with MPG.

   "According to fuelconomy.gov, the average new vehicle for the 2023 model year gets 28 miles per gallon (mpg)." A similar source said that the entire fleet as driven is still stubbornly at 26.5.

   So it's funny that the Miata, even driven a little bit more like I stole it, is bringing up that average.

     @John Question: Does that line up with your actual average MPG? I've found that most of the dashboard-computed ones are rather generous. My own (2014 BRZ) says 31.5 or so, and my actual average is more like 28-30. I can do 34 or so with real highway driving, but nowhere near that on the regular.

     It might be a weakness on my part, but I choose to believe the trip computers.

     Partly because they are giving me numbers I like, and partly because I think the difference is probably small enough to ignore. Someone must be checking these, and I doubt they cheat more than 10%.

     @Dylan @John Gotta record that mileage when you fill up, and compare the miles to the gallons purchased. That's where you get the real numbers from. All computers lie.

     I’ll add another ND2 data point for you. I usually drive “spiritedly” and I always avoid lugging the engine. I’m not afraid of RPMs — I usually shift out of first around 4k or so and I heel-toe pretty much all the time.

     I’ve always been impressed by the numbers this car returns. I even get pretty good mileage with the AC turned on.

     @John @Dylan Well, I wouldn't take one and only one full-up as an absolute indicator. Over time, (and many fill-ups) I would think that any variations would balance out.

     @murph @Dylan as a chemist I actually like the method that AAA used. Tailpipe emissions are going to be much more accurate than gas pumps, and certainly random gas pumps and conditions.
