   A new Mastodon app called Mammoth has already gained 10,000 downloads in the first few days of its availability on the App Store.

   "Simply: we want to contribute to Mastodon having 10m active users, then 100m. It’s early days still, and we don’t want to do anything that slows down adoption,”

     Please, when you mention Mammoth, do also mention that they
     a) require you to sign up on *their* instance when you use it.
     b) are backed by venture capitalists.

     They don’t want 100m users on the fediverse, they want them on *their own server*.

     Centralisation will be the death of the fediverse.

     @brendan You can sign in to your existing server if you already have one. If you don‘t (that’s the target market of this venture-capital-backed startup), then they lead you to their own instance.

     Given how VC works, they need to grow their instance as large as they can so they can exit (sell the startup) so their investors can earn their profit. Ideally, Mammoth has to scale quickly to become a billion-dollar exit.

     PS. The only time you can kill it is now.

     I started playing around with the Mammoth app on iOS and it did *not* require setting up an account on their instance. I was able to login to my own, etc. Has something changed?

     The list of servers you're given to search/browse when you click "Or sign in to an existing community?" is quite extensive.

     That's simply not true. I did use it on my own instance for testing.

     (I'm not defending Mammoth, but I think misinformation and misrepresentation won't help anyone)

     @nellie_m @aral @mastodonmigration @aurynn a) is wrong. It’s optional but default for people not already in and their attempt to simplify onboarding and get people started right away.
     b) ignores that their biggest contributor is Mozilla. The people behind Firefox and the last bastion of the web before it all succumbs to Google.

     (b) Mozilla is funded by ~$500,000,000 every year from Google. It is, as their head of public policy once told me when we were both speaking at the conference of data protection officers in the EU, “just another Silicon Valley tech company… why are you holding us to such a higher standard?” (For additional irony, a lawyer from Facebook also had a keynote. For yet more irony, his last place of work was CNIL.)

     (Also: we know how VC works even that ability to sign in to existing instances can be changed later. The only time you can stop a VC-funded startup is at the very start, before they have traction. Let’s not make the same mistake again. Perhaps I really need to write something more substantial about this given that folks are still giving them the benefit of the doubt.)

     How many times have you heard people say that the "pick a server" step is a stumbling block to newcomers?

     They've decided to solve that in a particular way. I don't see anything that suggests they would prevent users from migrating later if they choose too.
