@crunklord420 I want to try building a home server, primarily as a hobby. Uses will include file backup/network-wide filtering of ads/maybe email and small website hosting/potentially other uses.
I want to keep it simple, low poert consumption but still have enough options to tinker around and try stuff.
Is there any hardware you would suggest? Would, say, raspberry pi 5 be good starting point?

@Saxophone3784 sure I guess. I've never owned an SBC mainly because I don't have a legitimately purpose for one. Plus I think the Intel N100 MiniPCs have disrupted the SBC industry by hitting a price point that competes with them. I bought one recently and turned it into a home theater/media server as a gift for someone.
That said, for educational purposes, you don't need anything more than a virtual machine. You basically need to be saying that you want a 24/7 machine but also don't want to keep your normal PC running with a VM/just actually run Linux.
Don't buy things you don't need to. Raspberry Pi's aren't price competitive, even within the ARM SBC category.

@Saxophone3784 also someone mentioned the BPI-RP4 as an ideal open router solution. It's probably more expensive than some other SBCs, but this is not just a toy but might be the best wifi router on the market: https://wiki.banana-pi.org/Banana_Pi_BPI-R4

@crunklord420 Any specific n100 model you would suggest?

@Saxophone3784 literally the cheapest 16GB RAM model I could order. "Beelink" is the more established brand with like a $20 premium as compared to lesser known brands. The only difference between the majority of them is the number and type of USB ports.

@Saxophone3784 never heard of it

@crunklord420 btw, do you have opinion on simplex chat? was thinking of running its server.
