This might be an American thing more than a universal thing. Consider the UK version of The Office vs the US version. The boss in the UK version is an unlikeable, narcissistic ass. The boss in the US version is just a moron with a kind heart.

Zucker bros. found out TV was about likability when Police Squad, possibly the funniest US produced comedy series ever made, bombed so hard each episode was lower rated than the last.
Many years later a successful sitcom producer let them in on the secret. Insipid drivel like Friends, Cheers and The Cosby Show (lol) succeeds because the audience comes to see the characters as their friends and this parasocial relationship generates false coziness whenever it's on.
Barney Miller and Taxi were more intelligent versions of the same thing.
