  @fal1026 you can get cheap android phones for 100 or less now. no reason to hang on unless it's a flagship Samsung or something that costs 2 grand (yes I paid the insurance to Samsung for mine)

  My screen is cracked to the point now I have to constantly correct, & before I can send it out to be fixed I need a new backup, cuz the planned obsolescence of phones makes me look like a sentimental collector now

  @graf @fal1026 Do you really need to buy a $100 phone? Unless you don't know anyone BUT those scraping by in life, you probably have a couple people in your circle who wouldn't mind throwing you their last phone just to get it out of the junk drawer
  I've gotten 3 that way, seen another kid just get one from an old guy because he took a glance and saw it was "shitty".

  @givenup @graf @fal1026 Well that's the rub. Autists and single guys talk up android because it works fine for us in our niche - There's cool stuff about it but it's utterly impossible to do my job headache-free at the social level. The average user is just too dumb for everyone having android
  I constantly have boomers send me pics over text, and they get mad "it's blurry" when I'm putting up a listing with a 25mb cap, because they only understand "text" and "email" as methods to send pics

I know a guy who's a technical writer, says they've got a huge influx of retards who think they can fake their way to success using AI slop. Turns out you can't really push boundaries with it, it's good for writing press releases, nothing more. The graphics guys I know have taken it up as rapid prototyping, they can get an idea board to present the client with 9 ideas to hone their ideas and use the actual man-hours well
  These things are all tools, everything's got highs and lows. That's why it pisses me off hearing supposedly smart guys fail to understand they have a different mission profile from the norm, like car guys freaking out because you commute in a prius and not a 6-speed miata

  I, for instance, don't have "leftover phones" because Samsung gives me a big rebait for my old phone when I'm getting a new one. I think Apple also has something like that.

  @Suzu @fal1026 @graf I think the carrier subsidy is back for some? My boss upgraded because "my 2 years are up!" just like the old days. Not sure if true, but it would make sense given their slide in market share.
  Seems like all the uppermiddleclassers I know have a pile of phones from the parents, kids upgrading. I just remembered ANOTHER guy getting a free phone from his old lady friend - good folk are still out there, and they don't like seeing things go to waste

  @WashedOutGundamPilot @Bad_Banner @givenup @fal1026 I just use the AI in my phone to move people in pictures, fill in backgrounds. adjust and tilt and use generative AI to fill in whatever it thinks is missing. it's really really good at that. it's got some built in Google thing where I can tap and hold the bottom center of my screen and circle something on the display and it will use Google to find it. cool for products and stuff. works really well but otherwise I don't use any AI features

  @WashedOutGundamPilot @fal1026 @graf here's the thing: when I got the Z Fold, I got both the carrier subsidy, because I bought it in the carrier agency, and then I got an additional discount by giving my older phone, it's a Samsung campaign. It made the phone go from "prohibitively expensive" to "OK, I guess I can stomach it".
  
  When I got my previous phone 3 years ago, I did the same thing, with another carrier.

  So much that phones that use the Snapdragon Gen 2 (the Z Fold 5/Z Flip 5/S23) are having increased battery draining after the update that introduced AI. Samsung says it's a bug, but I think it's because the processor is not prepared for the AI stuff, so it consumes more energy to run it.
