Oaghaji (oaghaji@shitposter.club)'s status on Thursday, 23-Feb-2023 04:03:48 JST Oaghaji I find the whole "Street Fighter Clone" thing hilarious cause Street Fighter ain't original and didn't invent the Fighting Game Genre. The First Street Fighter Game from 1987 is a "Rip Off" of the 80s Fighting Games that predate it Karate Champ, Yie Ar Kung Fu and Punch-Out. - xianc78 likes this.

Oaghaji (oaghaji@shitposter.club)'s status on Thursday, 23-Feb-2023 04:03:45 JST Oaghaji Now keep in mind this isn't to put down Street Fighter. This is to show folks that there are Fighting Games that predate Street Fighter especially in the Gameplay Mechanics. So the "Street Fighter Clone" statement needs to be thrown out the window for good. -
Oaghaji (oaghaji@shitposter.club)'s status on Thursday, 23-Feb-2023 04:03:46 JST Oaghaji You also got Star And Fan from Yie Ar Kung Fu that also predate Chun Li. -

Oaghaji (oaghaji@shitposter.club)'s status on Thursday, 23-Feb-2023 04:03:47 JST Oaghaji Street Fighter didn't invent the Combo System either. The Combo System was introduced to Fighting Games in the 1985 Arcade Fighting Game Hokuha Syourin Hiryū No Ken aka Shanghai Kid. It also introduced the ability to perform Special Moves. -
Oaghaji (oaghaji@shitposter.club)'s status on Thursday, 23-Feb-2023 04:03:47 JST Oaghaji Street Fighter wasn't the first to introduce Female Characters to Fighting Games either. The 1985 Arcade Onna Sanshirō Typhoon Gal (Onna Sanshirou Typhoon Gal) did it first and it also introduced Grappling and Throws to Fighting Games as well. -

Moon (moon@shitposter.club)'s status on Thursday, 23-Feb-2023 04:04:01 JST Moon @Oaghaji I'm okay with calling later games street fighter clones because Street Fighter II consolidated and transcended everything good that came before it and everything after it really was a reaction to it specifically. cool_boy_mew likes this. -

No one played it vs another person - it was always more like an arcade beatem up with a weird control scheme here.

Oaghaji (oaghaji@shitposter.club)'s status on Thursday, 23-Feb-2023 04:16:22 JST Oaghaji I disagree. The original Street Fighter II The World Warrior is just as flawed if not more so than the ones that came before it. The Updates improve it especially Super Street Fighter II X aka Super Street Fighter II Turbo. Karate Champ and Yie Ar Kung Fu are fun. Not to mention it's all subjective at the end of the day. cool_boy_mew likes this. -

:letter_g:oalkeeper :yotsuba_happy: (goalkeeper@nicecrew.digital)'s status on Thursday, 23-Feb-2023 04:16:24 JST :letter_g:oalkeeper :yotsuba_happy: The mechanics of these games were radically different from modern fighting games. Street Fighter 2 tied it all together, improved all the mechanics, and created the formula for what constitutes a fighting game in the modern sense. So unfortunately it's not going anywhere. The vast majority of the games that predated street fighter do not hold up, at all. -
Oaghaji (oaghaji@shitposter.club)'s status on Thursday, 23-Feb-2023 04:16:24 JST Oaghaji I disagree. I think these Fighting Games that predate still hold up to this day especially Yie Ar Kung Fu. -

just an actual husbear :verified: (guizzy@pleroma.guizzyordi.info)'s status on Thursday, 23-Feb-2023 04:26:32 JST just an actual husbear :verified: @coolboymew @Oaghaji In Yie Ar KF you can get far abusing the jumping distance and kicks. Some other fun early ones: Karateka; kind of a fighting game with a story. Made by the Prince of Persia guy, but with all the emphasis on the fighting instead of platforming. Very aesthetic and moody game.
IK and IK(+) on the C64 is a cool one too, and the plus one is even 3 players.
The thing with pre-SF2 fighting games, and what made it so they didn't "take off" the way SF2 did, is that they tend to be strict on attack distance in both ways (both far and near) and so unfun until you learn that positioning game. So if you're too close your attack misses, you see your limb go straight through the opponent, and the game feels floaty and not fun. Or if you're too far your realistically proportioned character's short arm doesn't reach and you don't feel like you can hit anything without basically putting yourself into range of the CPU who seems to knows exactly what distance he can connect at.
SF2 beat that by a) ignoring the near distance; if the attack visually connects, you will hit, and b) using cartoonish characters with long limbs. So beginners can immediately jump in and feel like they're at least hitting something, even if they're losing. Add to that extra dopamine hits through supremely crunchy sound and animations and you have a game that feels very different even though it didn't actually invent all that much.cool_boy_mew likes this.cool_boy_mew repeated this. -

what a rush :bigband:
i wish there were more such cool characters that are stylish as fuck while also not being pure ass to play as.cool_boy_mew likes this. -

Oaghaji (oaghaji@shitposter.club)'s status on Thursday, 23-Feb-2023 12:02:05 JST Oaghaji If that's how you feel that's fine. This thread is made to debunk the myth that Street Fighter invented the Fighting Game Genre when it didn't. It only popularized the Genre. Especially the Gameplay Mechanics that were introduced in Fighting Games that predate it. Me personally the "Street Fighter Clone" is just hilarious when Street Fighter especially the First isn't original. I think it should be thrown out the window. cool_boy_mew likes this. -
