I'm mostly off GitHub, for a while now I've been largely working from CGit & now I have my own SourceHut server. But while GitHub has never been quite as dominant as it appears it is inevitable to want to contribute to projects there.
When I'm adopting projects like Typograffiti I haven't been moving them, but any new projects don't live there.
Agreeing with Ploum, I hate the gamification!

@alcinnz https://sfconservancy.org/GiveUpGitHub/ We don't have to entirely give up GitHub contributions; but perhaps we can reduce our usage and also hint people at how they can reduce their usage, as well (and why it's ethical to do so)

Though I find it can be roadblock to that if we leave our projects on GitHub, leads many to assume that's the easiest way on us to contribute...

@mangoiv Really it strikes me as perceived ease, "email me a link to your fork" (amongst other options) sounds easier to me. No need to sign up for yet another service!

@alcinnz I mean; you're completely right and indeed, for many people it *is* the easiest way to contribute, but the easiest is not always the most ethical or sustainable way and perhaps this is a case where it isn't.

@RyunoKi @mangoiv I'd be happy to integrate @forgefriends as one option of many! (Other options don't even require you to have a public fork)
But personally I'm more interested exploring potential enhancements to the web which benefits than code collaboration.

You know, I have the hope that @forgefriends will help us here with F3.
Basically, providing a service that allows for communication between different (git) Forges.
I'm applying for UI/UX in this regard (with Forgejo) at NLnet at the moment. Ideally with deliverables that can be reused.
What I've seen so far is some people putting a link to their new home (e.g. Codeberg) in the README and archiving GitHub repo.

@RyunoKi @mangoiv @forgefriends Personally I hate this aspect of GitHub, it is distracting... And makes it harder, not easier, to find the worthwhile code!

That being said, GitHub is about the Social Network, not git hosting.
Here I can imagine that Fediverse holds potential if only we work more on its substrate.
Something @smallcircles advocates for.

But as a coder I consider it incredibly detrimental for my uses. I find it fruitful to get away from it in my coding tools! That's not a protocol I'd personally want to use!
(Though I guess it could be argued issuetrackers are a fuzzy line...)

@alcinnz GitHub's killer feature is issues. Its social aspects are useful but secondary and there are good alternatives to that aspect [glances at the Mastodon logo!].
My problem with GH alternatives has been reliance on servers/services. That's the big drawback with GitHub and alternatives. git is decentralised, but we end up on servers because it's clunky and a UX pain in the ***.
So I made a proof of concept p2p git that includes that killer feature: issues. https://github.com/happybeing

@markhughes Yes, every alternative has to address issues! I'm running my own SourceHut Todo for that! Before that I created something rudimentary...
Can't say I've got too much issue if there's several servers/services. As long as everyone's not asking me to make an account, which they mostly are.
Though having something p2p would lower barriers to projects being self-sufficient in this regard. Definitely worth exploring!

@dpflug Great! Took a bit to configure all the pieces to work together, & you might want to select your distro based on what they have it packaged for (unless you don't have an underpowered machine).
But very hackable with a nice minimalist aesthetic! I'm loving it!

@alcinnz How is self-hosting Sourcehut? I've been using Gitolite and considering spinning up one of the forges.
