@coolboymew you don't have a home server, your account is just a secret key. you make posts and you give them to relays and people to subscribe to others through these relays. so relays are kind of a choke point like home servers but not as bad because if a relay drops you you're not intrinsically tied to that relay, you just upload to another one and everything works the same. that's how i understand it, i'm not on it yet i will be soon so i can give a more informed report.
@r000t@coolboymew your actual id is a private signing key, that is how people subscribe to you. i think on some relays when you sign up you an get a friendly id but it's just for that relay
@coolboymew@r000t i don't think getting banned from a relay matters that much because somebody could subscribe to you through multiple relays. anyway the issue seems to be that the network has tons and tons of spam and the way that that is currently gotten around is you give a small bitcoin payment to a relay and this keeps out spammers.
@r000t@coolboymew your user is not intrinsically tied to a relay like a fedi user is to an instance so nothing breaks about your follow if you get banned from a relay. you can get someone's posts from multiple relays because they're just aggregators.
@coolboymew@r000t i am getting on it so i can look around and so i can make sure i understand very well how it works so i know the tradeoffs. fedi is home and i don't see that changing unless something crazy happens.
