Can't believe they spent a gigawatt training GPT3 and the fucker isn't even trying to overthrow humanity.
Look, where I come from, if you burn a gigawatt of energy to make an AI, it had better damn well go skynet on you.

If you spend that much time and effort building an AI it should be less than an hour before something is on fire, several people are dead, and someone is talking about how it was wrong to tamper in God's domain.
I know it seems ridiculous but I think the main problem with the AI industry is insufficient hubris.
@mahryekuh it can be both!
@foone I am unsure if you are excited for the AI apocalypse or you just like to taunt our future overlords.

@chris It's still too much energy to waste on a glorified chatbot that isn't even going to kill us all!
@foone A gigawatthour is just about what a Boeing or Airbus uses in fossil fuel when crossing the Atlantic ocean.
There are about 600 planes doing this trip per day. That‘s how humanity is going to be overthrown.
@curtmack @mahryekuh look, I'm a pope. If I'm getting smited, it's by a real god, not a overgrown copy of ELIZA
@mahryekuh @foone "What are you gonna do, smite me?" - quote from transfem smited
Sucking up resources is evidence Skynet became self sustaining sometime around 1999, and really hit its stride by 2010 or so. GenAI is just more proof.
Power calc pedantry to follow.

Estimated ~10gwh to train, and ~1gwh/day to run.
~500 days in operation, so ~1/2 twh consumed so far.
~25pwh annual global electric consumption.
So, < one fiftythousandth of global consumption (~0.005%).
