I once heard a joke that you could walk into Chicago or Detroit and kill every person you saw out past midnight, and the murder rate would actually lower from that date forward because you removed the source of the crime.
I think this also applies to collective/individual suffering. If you (hypothetically) shot every fat fuck in town, there'd be some grief but the predominant unspoken feeling would be relief. Nobody would have to wipe their ass for them, and no one would have to spend 2/3rds of their income on a calorie vacuum guilting them in their house.
We all suffer a little by letting a few people suffer a lot.
