  @PhenomX6 @rqsd @netdoll @chjara @koakuma not only have i used Alpha and powerpc nt4 in real life, i have used intel nt4 SGI desktop https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SGI_Visual_Workstation i have used tons of weird platforms in my career. in no situation do i ever recall a clear reason why that exotic platform was needed for the job it was doing.

    SGI Visual Workstation is a series of workstation computers that are designed and manufactured by SGI. Unlike its other product lines, which used the 64-bit MIPS RISC architecture, the line used Intel Pentium II and III processors and shipped with Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 as its operating system in lieu of IRIX. However, the Visual Workstation 320 and 540 models deviated from the architecture of IBM-compatible PCs by using SGI's ARCS firmware instead of a traditional BIOS, internal components adapted from its MIPS-based products, and other proprietary components that made them incompatible with internal hardware designed for standard PCs and hence unable to run other versions of Microsoft Windows, especially Windows 9x. By contrast, the remaining models in the line are standard PCs, using VIA Technologies chipsets, Nvidia video cards, and standard components.   I actually had a SGI 320...sold/traded it on to someone else because the thing had shitty GPU drivers.
  
  I actually knew a guy who used Alpha and IA64 windows later on, his reasoning was the CPU speed of the era for Alpha (even though it could arguably be one of the first CPUs with "inflated MHz"), and RAM usage for IA64 (being this was the weird period in between x86 and AMD64 windows, so like early 2000s).

  Japanese home computers too. Thousands of dollars for a gaming machine (FM Towns and x68k) in the era of the $700 A500 is something that took insanity and a bubble economy to do, and worse the x68000 couldn't exactly run business software like an FMT could.
  
  One of the forgotten interesting ages of gaming IMO.

  @Moon @rqsd @graf @netdoll @chjara @koakuma I actually got a fm towns with a 486 recently. It's missing the CD drive so it's basically a brick right now. I ordered another parts machine with a bad psu and 386 and I'll just borrow the CD drive from that until someone makes an ode.
