Apparently all it takes is a court order for a European country to not be racist.

Apparently all it takes is a court order for a European country to not be racist.
So Dutch border police have been told by the courts to stop ethnic profiling… Hey, I wonder, can we do Belgium next?
Whaddaya say, @EU_Commission, given you’re headquartered there and all? You down with the racial profiling being carried out at the borders?
Any thoughts, @FRA?
Any local politicians/MEPs want to take this on?

@aral @EU_Commission @FRA I couldn’t agree more. In #Belgium conditions for refugees, undocumented migrants and homeless of all nationalities are atrocious.
Maybe someone should create a web site where we list which EU countries carry out racial profiling and publish the experiences of people who have been racially profiled at EU borders. 🤔
Maybe we can use the fediverse to gather those experiences…
Here, I’ll start:
I was racially profiled by Belgian border police two weeks ago at Brussels Airport.

@aral, oh, tell me the fun I have with my Uzbekistan passport :)
@sardo If you’re up for it, please tell everyone. Let’s shine a light on this bigotry so we can hopefully relegate it to the dustbin of history:
Oops, did I just register the domain racial-profiling.eu? I might have.

@aral @EU_Commission @FRA
Hi, I am just writing a text about AI today, is there any source for AI based racial profiling in EU?
@ChristophKappes @EU_Commission @FRA I don’t personally know of any but I’ll boost your post in case anyone else does.
@aral you can legally ban the Dutch from acting racist, but rest assured we’ll even commit human rights violations while pretending to find final solutions [pun very much intended] for our previous racist actions.
A little background: the ruling parties of our country have for years been placating the far right (their voters and ex-party members) by removing all but one location where asylum seekers can go to register. This with the intention of making life so miserable for refugees, they’d go “bother” another country. All with the quiet part out loud (although our famously forgetful prime minister certainly won’t have an “active memory” of that).
Now not only are those people (including kids ffs) still sleeping rough and left adrift, but the anti-immigrant sentiment in the small villages around the centre in Ter Apel (because of course this festering disaster is not located anywhere near the seats of power) is constantly flaring up. All of it intentional and part of the design.
Then, to solve the mess our neoliberal right wing leaders intentionally and wilfully created, our cabinet and governing parties decided to postpone refugee family reunions. Which was…
[checks decision by the courts]
… effin’ illegal. https://nltimes.nl/2023/02/08/dutch-government-cant-limit-family-reunification-refugees-council-state-rules
You can’t make this stuff up.
Okay, gotta stop my slide down this hellhole and calm down now.

@leadegroot Oh, likely it’s been far less than that.
I have no reason to believe my experience or that of the two Belgian citizens of Turkish birth who were in there with me or the other Brown and Black folks in the “waiting room” was a coincidence.
Belgian border police are racially profiling EU citizens as a matter of course on a daily basis. This is policy.
@aral "it has been [ 2 ] weeks since since someone was racially profiled at [Brussels Airport \/]"
?
:(
@felipebaez I’m so sorry to hear it, Felipe. Here’s hoping the recent court ruling will improve things. But I’m not holding my breath.
@aral my family has quite a bad experience with the Dutch border police. My family member never wants to visit Netherlands because of it. It even wasn’t her final destination, Amsterdam was just the connecting flight to Prague, coming from Dublin. EU country to EU country.
@aral @felipebaez ....actually proud of our court system in het Netherlands, it's independent and works, ofcourse the important thing is actual change in behaviour, i am optimistic, this ruling gets a lot of attention also with the police.
(I still have folks in the Netherlands argue with me that blackface isn’t racist so there’s a long way to go.)
