Time for a contentious take w/ gun hobbyists:
I think a lot of gun trainers are people trying desperately to complicate a fundamentally simple act because there’re only so many ways to make money after a career as a grunt, so they try to gussy it up into PHD-level kinesthetics. There’s plenty of value in having routine, muscle memory, and training out weaknesses, but they tend to stretch it out into a Rifle I/ Rifle II/ Rifle III/ Advanced Rifleman I/ Advanced Rifleman II….. course system because they have to fill those classes up with something.
In reality, they’d be providing better value by hammering people on fitness and firing under pressure instead of “Rotary wing operations”, or “Convoy Protection I”. I wouldn’t be so hard on them if they just said “hey, it’s fun”, but they’ll really try to sell fat, out of shape guys on an $8,000, 2,000-round course and pretend it’s the best way to spend that money.
