You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the LORD. (Leviticus 19:28)
The Hebrew and Greek words for "tattoo" is unique, קַֽעֲקַ֔ע (qaaqa) and στικτὰ (stikta) which is a form of στίγμα (stigma), which means mark or brand.
Don't let anyone tell you that those words merely mean cut-in religious lettering or spells and not any kind of tattooing. The Hebrews were around the Egyptians, who were known to frequently tattoo others during the time of the Exodus and not always for religious purposes.
