Soft power groups like this are largely extinct in our culture today but there is an order, a tradition that you must follow as a member. Is it worth destroying your good name for a quarter? With as much money as this guy has that's about what it's worth to him to get that five hundred a month.

   In the mean time, he gains a probably loyal bannerman who can be a more faithful son than his own children turned out. At least everyone else feels like the guy's a good kid, helpful and generous with his own meager resources. I've found good white boys that spend some time in poverty tend to be very solid once they climb out - better than those who'd never felt the deep hunger of a truly empty pantry
