@Wolffkran I unfortunately can't find the piece I remembered on this one, but it's interesting to me that there's now a whole body of journalistic talk about the era that makes it sound as if the americans were more hands-off than they used to.
I totally believe the story as it was originally relayed, where apathetic, dumb GIs who just wanna go home can't tell the difference between a 400-year old copy the the bible in german or mein kampf, nor would they care to. They did the same thing in japan, grinding millions of treasures and heirlooms into beer cans when they demilitarized the civilians there. Good luck telling private Clayton Biggs, georgia negro, that the sword on your mantle is actually a 1,000-year-old piece only 2 generations removed from muramasa - he can't understand a whit, and if you piss him off you'll inflame his rape instincts
It bothers me because the very same old guys who love collecting military history and whine about a sporterized garand don't give a shit about the widespread cultural destruction imposed by the allies. We really didn't give a shit about cultural protection until a bunch of NYC nerds (jews) and art collectors realized there were millions of dollars just sitting out there unprotected, leading to the modern narrative that "actually the US and britain cared WAY more about protecting cultural artifacts just watch the tom hanks movie!!!"
