@RadixVerum I don’t like how they’re comparing this to status at all. Guys are much more linear about things overall. Are they earning as much as they should? Are they getting a square deal? The dropouts they’re talking about here don’t see “status”, they see the real, meaningful things that are inherently packaged into that status.

A wife? Haha, just ask around his deteriorated friend circle about their many divorces.

A home? Well, anywhere that has work, costs a lot to live in. What’s the point anyway, without a wife and children when he’s only there to sleep for 8 hours? A waste of labor/money.

Add in the base level of…call it respect but it’s hard to nail down this feeling. Think about what it’s like to bust your ass on some hard, arduous project, kneeling for 8 hours a day, sleeping in your truck for a week, and then being ordered into the office to have a faux-chipper office woman sit you through a 3 hour powerpoint and make veiled, passive-voice threats about firing you because the secretary visited the site and reported you for calling your underlings ‘douchebags’.

Imagine the irritation of spending 60 hours a year sitting through condescending lectures about how YOU need to change the very fabric of your social code, omit entire blocks of essential camaraderie-building speech, all to make people (who hate your guts) more comfortable on the extremely unlikely off chance they ever join your line of work.

Now imagine getting 3 days off, you’re in pain, you’re tired, and you realize you’re making 30% less than the schoolmarm saying “okay everybody, we can’t keep using “guys“, that’s gendered, non-inclusive language”

You realize you can just drop it and live like a goddamn rat. You have nobody depending on you, you have little reason to pay into the pot, anyways. What are you getting out of all this work? What good is it actually doing you?

I get why they drop out.
